Tim, I’m looking to do the same I was considering the Black Hole Giant blank on a Aftco bent butt ub4 with Winthrop tip and Fuji SIC guides. Interested in hearing other recommendations.

Frank, IMO the Rt130 is going way to stout for swordfish you’ll end up pulling hooks on them. I’ve built them on the RT80 72” with a Aftco UB6 unibutt. With the longer blank the rod flexes more and results in less pulled hooks.

I use it quite often weight and stiffness Is not an issue. I make a template out is a plain index card. I wrap the card around the blank just overlapping a bit. I cut the abalone with an razor to size. I then boil it in water until the adhesive side darkens, then peal and wrap on the blank. Then overwrap the abalone with size d thread and let it dry for a few hours. The hardest part is making sur

Hi, I was going to use either 65 or 80# braid and 130 wind-on. I thought the 16s were on the large end but I compared it to my friend's Black Hole rod of the same size and his guides are 40 30 25 20 16. The Black Hole was built using standard spinning guides not the newer concept guides. Thanks Bruno

Hi, I'm looking to build a Tuna popping rod using Bushido BP76200 blank and pared with a Penn Torque II 7500. The blank is 7' 6" looking to use Fuji Tangle free KWSG guides with a layout of 40 25 16 16 16 tip 16. Any thoughts on the layout would be appreciated. Thanks Bruno

Tony, I like and use the RT80 in a 6'6" length the additional length give it a softer tip and helps with pulled hooks. Great blank. Catchem up!

I boil it in a pan of water until the adhesive side of the abalone turns dark. I then apply it to the blank and wrap D thread over the entire abalone section to squeeze out any moisture and adhesive. Let if dry for about 3 to 4 hours. I've used this method on a lot of rods and haven't had any problems.

Hi, Does anyone have a source for aluminum winding checks with an inside diameter of 17mm? The largest I've found is the alps 15mm. Thanks Bruno

Thanks everyone for all the ideas. I'm building a Bushido BVJ58400 and I wasn't able to find a 12" grip with a 3/8" or 1/4" hole smallest in that size 1/2". My other option is to do cork or make my own EVA grip but I really like the cross cut grips.

Hi, I'm installing a 12" cross-cut EVA grip with a 1/2" hole on a vertical jigging blank. The blanks taper is smaller than a 1/2". Do most of you just use masking tape rings to build it up, similar to a reel seat installation? Thanks Bruno

Ed, Hopefully Kevin from Angler's Envy responds to this. Maybe he's seen this before. I've built about a dozen rods using abalone and had this happen to 3 of them. They were the ones that I tried the mixture of the two brands of epoxy. Bruno

John, The area that is totally wrapped with abalone such as the butt wrap and between the rollers.

I've had the same issues with cracks in the epoxy around the blank especial noticeable over abalone sections. This happened on rods that I tried mixing Prokote and Threadmaster together to get the best features of both products. I've since gone to straight Threadmaster and haven't had the problems.

Dave, my standard chuck is the all plastic one and it works okay for wrapping guides except for occasionally the dent washer pops out. I have a couple of rods to build that have 14" rear cork grips that I need to shape. I don't think the plastic chuck will hold up under the sanding pressure. So I was think of upgrading to a more stable chuck.

Hi, I have a PacBay rod lathe with the standard chuck and I'm looking to turn some cork grips on the blank. I was wondering which chuck works the best, I believe either one will fit my lathe. Any thoughts? Thanks Bruno
