If you are getting your tape from auto parts stores that could also be the cause of the contamination. The tape isnt in a completely sealed container and they do handle lots of chemicals that contain silicone in one form or another.

Build an arbor for the end of the hood/nut and ream it so it slides easily on the blank and use the tinted epoxy to then fill the gap between the winding check and the Id of your hood

Norman, I would be happy to buy some of those micro guides from you. I am interested to try some truly micros on a build.

Being shorter than the advertised length should be enough to consider it not only cosmetic as you bought a blank that was advertised as x length and what you recieved was not as advertised in my opinion.

Duracoat can also match gun blueing very well.

Definitely agree with you on the fatigue David. The vast majority of my arsenal are casting rods anywhere from 5'6" to 8' and just about every combination of action and weight for bass fishing. I have a couple of very slow action spinning rods for weightless bait river catfishing but most of that arsenal is casting as well. Much rather fight a large fish with a casting reel vs spinning any d

I use both spinning and casting rods. As stated earlier lighter baits do better with spinning rods. I also use my spinning rods for any technique that has me reeling in slack line regularly as i dont have to worry with how it is laying on the spool.

Thank you Tom. There has been a lot more posted about the simple spiral than any of the other spiral wraps. Shooting from memory here the 180 guide is approx 12 inches from the first guide and if a bumper is used you want it as close to the blank as possible. I was looking for some comparisons between the simple and some of the others. I know anything other than simple will be a little more diff

I have read lot about the simple spiral here, just wanted some input on the other methods talked about in other posts. Trying to make the leaning curve as short as possible!

I know this is going to be a can of worms but, I have been reading a lot about spiral wraps here and I am getting ready to wrap an 8ft Fenwick blank. What is the best spiral layout to use?

When working with thin plastics you also have to be very slow and deliberate while drilling to not crack the plastic.

I have used tru oil on gun stocks with some plastic and it always turns out great. I use very fine sandpaper between coats and out it o with my fingers with nitrile gloves then hang it up to dry.

Thank you very much Tom. You have been a big help on laying this out. I hope to get this ready this weekend. One last question, do you think the size 6 is correct for the reel I am planning on using with this rod? I also have a 7 and 8 that i could use as the stripper guide.

Mudhole shipped a replacement yesterday and will probably be the weekend before I get to do anything with the rod so I will just have some extras.

What about bumper guide size?

The first one I do is going to be an 8ft lamiglass 7 power bug bait special. This rod will have an Abu Garcia 5600 reel and be used mostly for heavy lure bass fishing. I was thinking of going 6-5-4. Is the 6 big enough for this setup and what size bumper guide would I need?

When setting up a micro guide rod, should the tip top match your running guides or be larger? I have read both ways here and just looking for some clarification.

And do micro guides do well on a spiral?

What is the spacing going 0 to 180? And is the stipper guide placed as it would be on a conventional setup?

This is going to be my first big overhaul. I also have an 8ft heavy action blank to build, but thought I would do a couple rebuilds before starting from scratch. Waiting on mudhole to convert a factory spinning rod to microwave guides, one of the running guides in my set came in with the ceramic broken, and converting another to Kr concept.

Thank you for your input Mark. What layout would you use? I am just learning of these. I am already planning on re wrapping an 8ft Lamiglass 7 power big bait special. It will be done with micrguides. What layout would you recommend here? I bought this rod diet cheap due to it having mis-matched guides but otherwise perfect.

I have been reading a lot of posts about spiral guide setups. I know the benefits whilst fighting a fish, but for a bass fishing rod does the spiral setup a benefit or detriment to casting? I fish a lot of Texas rig worms with 1/8 oz weight and 7.5" worms.
