What I mean is it was starting to set up and went back to fix something and each stroke I made pretty much stayed in place even after applying heat and I ended up making it a lot worse than had I just left it to set up and then add another layer over top.

Thanks Gents. So far to date I've put them on a mandrel and glue up, shaped then mounted. My Rear grips have been the same but keeping it centered on a lathe with the butt piece glued on has proved difficult and I've noticed my shaping of rear grip has been a little off axis. Its worked but I'm not super happy with that yet. Unfortunately I don't have drill press to do it as stated above.

So I accidentally dragged the epoxy and tried to fix it but made it worse. Is there any fixing it, can I cut it off a bit with a razor blade and re-coat it if so can I leave a hard edge from the razor blade or do I sand it down then re coat.

Hi guys I’m wondering the process you guys use to ream out a rear grip on a spey or switch rod. Do you ream out the cork then glue up or glue up then ream the cork then glue on the butt piece? Trying to find best practice.

What is the secret to eliminating guides for a lighter weight as opposed to sticking with manufacturers guidelines? How do you really test to see if it will work and how do you know which guide to eliminate?

Thanks Tom I kind of figured that was the case. On my first rod I put too much on and found it easier to put the epoxy right through. On my next one I’ll try to eliminate the excess.

Do you have any fast action mhx switch or Spey rods that are truly a broomstick of a rod?

I’m new to rod building and this page. Just wondering a couple things to start: 1) why no epoxy in between double foot guides? 2) I’ve built two mhx fly rods 9ft 8 wt and 11ft 5 wt. I have another 11ft 8 wt and 13’6” 8 wt both Mhx to build and an h and h Xi 10ft 4 wt to build. These are my first rods I’m building on from what I understand to be the cheaper side of blanks.
