I agree with Phil... You have to mix the epoxy for like two minutes. I actually set a timer! I built my first rod with a mudhole kit about 6 years ago the prokote on it still feels kind of sticky and soft.

Chris... I feel like Cole Trickle in Days of Thunder.... I lack the vocabulary to build my own blank I just chuck the lead! Honestly I don't know what exactly what I want, or how to describe it. I think that is really cool that CTS does that for you though. I have heard good things about them, but have never used or held one of the blanks. Lots of people in this thread suggesting it though.

They said 993 but it had been discontinued like 15 years ago. You are probably right about it not handling the weight. Their post just gave me the idea of thinking out of the box to find something

Thanks so much for the tips everyone. I think I will email REC on Monday and order three sets of guides from them. You all seem to think they are good. I am sure the snake brand are too. I am just remembering emailing them about something else and getting really good customer service. I don't know about the handles and seats yet. Never tried the carbon fiber grips, but I might. Gary, I rebuilt an old Fenwick rod for a friend last summer. Used the PacBay single foot guides in gold color and they were good. Just checked mudhole and they have them in stock. It was an UL spinning rod, but I am sure it they would work for yours also. Thanks for the tips on my fly rod build

I finally got my 8, 10, and 12wt fly blanks from NFC. Planning on using them in the saltwater for the typical bonefish, permit and tarpon. I have never built a fly rod. Hi, I got a Rod Geeks blank in the mail I ordered yesterday. It's painted ice blue... Having never used a painted blank like this before I was wondering if I should sand the paint to expose bare graphite before epoxying on the reel seat? I don't know if the usual roughing up with a scotch brite pad is enough? Thanks, Danny
