I am definitely in the +/- cork dust and epoxy filler perhaps just by itself, but a winding check on top of this is the ticket. Unless you're some sort of sculptor, this will give you a perfect cosmetic finish.

This may be true in general, but not in this case it isn't. In the example of the Flex Coat data, the weight ratio is 1:0.838. Great. Now let's say that you and I want to prepare 3mls total of combined mix.

Surely you aren't filling in the space between the masking tape bushings (at least I hope not). Encapsulating means you're just coating over the ends of the tape to seal out any moisture. Wow. WOW!!!!!!! OK Tom, I'm either going to be the only

Herb..."I thought you wanted a one piece reamer." I'm not sure what that means Herb, but I have several grit reamers that I have been using for years. They are of different diameters and tapers. They are getting worn, and I want to revive them as needed. I was just looking for the technique. You seem to have come up with it. I just thought that instead of stripping them to accom

Thank you guys. I will give it a go. I will either try to clean off my old reamers, or likely visit my local flea market that always has numerous old fishing rods for sale for a few bucks. I'll clean one up, cut it into appropriate sections, and start from scratch!

Thanks Herb! Couple of questions... When dusting with the grit, is the reamer shaft lying on the table and you are rolling it until it gets covered...or do you have it suspended in the air by one hand while dusting with the grit in the other? Then, once you give it the squeeze, will any "waves' you might instill on it disappear once on the dryer? I am assuming that by the way you descr

Because I build so few rods, and because the first reamers I ever used for my cork handles/grips were simple grit reamers, I continue to use them to this day. I have several that have gotten pretty sparse over time, and I would like to recoat them if I could. I have the grit I intend to use, but I'm not at all sure what to use for epoxy or how to apply it or the grit. I have seen references th

Yes...likely a dumb question, but since I don't know the answer, it isn't dumb for me! I purchased a Loomis fly rod about twenty-five years ago that had 0 rings somewhere along the threaded stem, somehow related to the double locking nuts. The only reason I knew of their existence is that they eventually both broke, and their being loosely attached after snapping brought them to my attention.

I think Pat nailed it logically. It appears that eight inch handles seem to be pretty popular among average sized people, but if you were to have especially long arms, perhaps a touch longer. This should be good for bass type freshwater, and most inshore saltwater use. So that is what you have to work with. If eight inches is the ticket, the bottom of your reel seat will sit at that eight inc

Herb, I see that you recommended REC guides in both snake and single foot models. Do you have a preference in general, or possibly one type for one application, and the other type for a different application? I seem to be seeing more votes for snake guides these days as opposed to single foot guides. For saltwater application and an 8 weight blank, what would your preference be?

Are there any bona fide reasons that rods in the 7-8-9 weight ranges are better built with snake guides vs. single foot wire ring guides as runners? I hopefully will be starting an 8 wt. for salt water some time in the near future.

Actually John, although all "drops" are not created equal, after over forty years of watching IV bag drip rates, the average drop is about 1/15th of a cc (or ml if you prefer...one and the same). You can call those two guides Peter and Paul for all I care, the issue remains the same.

Measuring guide diameters, whether inside or outside, for the purpose of putting the ones you already own in size places is one thing. But I have seen written on this board multiple times people giving advice on guide sizes for various weight fly rods using the "numbers". For example...for a 9 weight rod...Two strippers, #16 and #12, then single foot guides of one #5, two #4s and the

John, Odd that there is no response to your question yet. I too am looking for some information related to fly guide sizing. Whether snake or single foot guides, I'm not really sure what the numerical designations of the guides mean to me. Is there in fact a standardization for these numbers? Do the numbers correspond to standardized diameters relative to those numbers? I have seen some

With proper thread tension, I wouldn't expect any guides to be "really loose". Also, I am assuming that that is what "locking wraps" are for.
