I'm a newbie so afraid if I can describe my question make sense. I'm currently building 12'6" 7/8wt spey rod and found the diameter around the bottom end of section 1 (butt section) & 2 is very close. They both have dia.10mm. Although I have less experience, I thought it is common that section 1 has a bigger diameter around the bottom end. Is the design of this blank particular? If

When attempting feather inlay, I cannot lay the feather on the blank properly because of its stiff shaft. Is there any way to soften them? I tried steam but did not make it softer. Thank you.

Gene, Thank you for sharing your thought. It is very interesting to hear that you determine the guide setting by rod characteristics. This is a topic I just had a discussion with expert builder friends recently.
