I was almost done with a retrieve, when this big walleye hit. The lure was hanging about 7 feet straight down, so when I did my hookset, it was a straight up motion.....a little high sticking and I was fighting the fish by hand with a broken rod! It was kinda funny.......

I'm looking for roller tops like these. They swivel left and right, as well as roll the line. If anyone knows where to find them, please let me know!

6. Birch handle
I'm putting together a tutorial, on how I do my birch grips with the angles, and the elk antler. I really enjoyed making these, and I thank those individuals that have shown an interest!

Broken fly rod. The owner broke an additional 2-3 inches off (down to the next guide), after the break, so that he could keep fishing with it. Regretfully he threw that piece away, so I had to guess how long the pole used to be. Inner plug, replacement section, and an outer sleeve.

I hooked 23 other trout on this morning, with this being the biggest landed. I caught this on a rod I built, with a fly I tied, made of dubbing I manufacture! Talk about interactive sports!

This was the 1st rod I put feathers on. Not very happy with the rod, but the walleye made me smile! I did not plan the feathers out, and ended up with some big gaps, and I tried wrapping threads over each other, without finish in between, and ended up with gapped thread as well. Learned alot since then!

I used a background layer of lavender guinea hen, with jungle cock feathers and a trimmed peacock eye. Gained a new respect for peacock feathers, with this rod!

17. Re: Sticky epoxy
Darrel,
You may want to consider the Jacquard Pearl-ex powders, too, if this is for marbling. They have a nice shine to them.
Take care,
Chris

Seth,
Something else: I use Kimtech Kimwipes delicate task wipers, green box. 280 per box, nice size, and lint free. They are very strong, too, even when wetted with alcohol.
I bought several cases on the big online @#$%& site, for a good price. I've been using these for years, after I saw them in use at one of the big rod manufacturers.
Take care,
Chris

19. Re: Syncork
Hi Paul,
If it can't be turned on a mandrel, then the way Roger described is your best bet. Works great.
Take care,
Chris

20. Re: Syncork
Hi Paul,
You would need to turn the syncork on a mandrel, then glue it on the rod. This way the chuck grips the mandrel not the cork.
Take care,
Chris

Fernando,
If you are putting the PermaGloss on the paint you just put on, you may want to try a test piece first. PermaGloss may dissolve your paint.

Jon,
As you build your coats up you can trim the high spots. I've put on as many as 6 coats of epoxy over feathers, just to get the right look.
I use a scalpel to selectively trim the high spots. If you use sandpaper, make sure no grit gets stuck in the epoxy.
Take care,
Chris

27. Re: Wood Handles
Brody,
Permagloss works fantastic for this type of application! It will slightly darken the wood, allowing the grain to show better. It won't be a high gloss finish, but it holds up well.
Take care,
Chris

Steve,
See how you like dark blue, light blue, and silver metallic. I like these with copper.

Kenneth,
I don't use CP on my wraps, and I like the way it turns out. One thing to keep in mind if you don't use CP, is to make sure you do your wrap tie off/loop pull through on the bottom side, or non-visible side of the rod. Without CP you will see the metallic thread of the tie off going under the other thread wraps.
Take care,
Chris

Eric,
You could also do a split grip, and leave it as two smaller sections of cork using less rings overall.
Take care,
Chris
