If you can afford flyfishing and rodbuilding as hobbies, why not just build another rod or 3 of appropriate size and weight?

You can paint the feet green after proper prep if you really want them invisible under finish. Your prep will remove the black and you'll end up with the bare metal showing anyway. When I use black framed guides, I touch them up for the same reason that I don't use CP most of the time and don't want half silver feet showing. Just have to test wrap one or two to be sure you know exactly how far

Thanks for the info, I appreciate it! For a one off build the cost isn't a big issue. I rarely build or use spinning rods (this will only be the 3rd one ever) I'll be using it while I recover from a 2nd shoulder surgury. Another question on set up- I've read to use the chart for the guide placement... I can see that for the stripper and transition guides but the rest, does it matter? The

Pardon the ignorance, as I've been away from the site and craft for a while. I am intrigued by the micrwave set up and see that a number of you have endorsed it's value. I see most talking about light braid but as a mono user, I wonder does the casting still improve to a noticable degree when using mono? I didn't get this specific info in a search. Thanks for your input, Keith

Tom is right about height. A foot surgery prevents my standing for long periods, so I solved the issue by lowering my chair. No more sore neck.

I have done it on a 2 and a 4 weight... love them both.

I'm sure you guys are right, it just feels funny to start out with yellow finish.

Hmm... Well I haven't noticed any of my finished rods from the last 5 years yellowing like this... even ones that were finished from these bottles. Maybe if you start with clear resin and hardener, you'll be much clearer for much longer. I'll save these bottles for dark colored rods/threads or giveaway rods. Thanks for the info!

I have some threadmaster that is going on 2 years old. It's pretty yellow (both parts) and some threadmaster lite that only the hardener yellowed. It seems like I remember somone saying you could microwave them or something and it helped restore clarity?? I mixed up a test batch of each and they clear up a little when mixed but they don't get clear as it should be. Can it be saved, or do

Do any of you know of a smaller casting reel seat, more suited to a child's hand? (4 year old) I haven't had any luck finding one so far. I'm considering trying to make one but would rather see if there are available option out there, first. Thanks!!

"For that matter I have never fished a fly rod in salt water" You have just stumbled onto one of the greatest things life has to offer!!!!

Thanks for the info... I did think about popping or mod-fast cranking blanks as they would probably be a little easier to cast I think. I guess I need to grab a few of my casting rods and see how they load with different fly lines. I can tape a fly reel on them to try it out. I probably should have done that first! Still welcome further input. Best, Keith

I'm looking to build a fly rod in 8-10 wt. as a heavy cover rod for bass. I'm thinking I want this in the 7' to 8' range. I'll be fishing in and around a bunch of timber and hydrilla so I want it both shorter and stouter than "normal" sort of like the mag bass feel in a fly rod. Any specific suggestions on blanks? Thanks!

I figured it wasn't exact, and since I didn't have any idea, it would be a good place to start. if I wanted to use a casting blank to make a short (7'-8') flyrod for 8 wt line, I'd be looking for something rated to about 1/2 oz. as the middle of the stated lure weight range? Just making sure I follow correctly. Thanks again.

I have seen a formula a few times in the past for figuring what weight fly rod a spinning or casting blank would translate to… but can’t find it now that I want it. …lol Can one of you refresh my memory on it? (or provide a link) Thanks!

I've used waterslide decals ever since I began building but I need to use a self adhesive on a current build. (Batson blank decal if it would matter) Will micro set work on self adhesive decals to allow a few seconds to straighten/position? Thanks, Keith

I raise the front rod support considerably, and use 1-2 additional, but lighter coats.

I like Batson a lot (fly and casting) and have build a number of them... part of the consideration of this particular build, was blank color so that limited me.

Thanks for the info. Just to clarify- I wasn't going to remove the entire inscription, just part of it. I don't want all that factory writing on a custom rod. (besides, it is written way up above the grip) I was going to leave the "TiCR-X 9wt" in place. If they would not honor the warranty even if I just wrapped over part of the inscription, I'd be shocked. It's not like any othe

Hoping one of you has done this before... I have a TFO Ticr-x want to remove the "Temple fork outfitters"and "lefty kreh" that's written up the blank. It appears to be screen printed, not a decal. If I can remove it safely, I don't want to over wrap the area... but I'm nervous as to how to remove it without taking the blue paint with it. Any ideas? Alternatively, d

Is there any appreciable difference between the U-40 ferrule lube and the Renzetti Ferrule Lube? The u-40 isn't available where I have an order to place but they do have the Renzetti. I hate to pay a separate shipping charge for a single item. Any feedback appreciated.

What size stripper guide are you generally using on 9 wt rods? The TNLSG comes in a 16... I assume that's fine but since I don't build many fly rods, wanted to see that you guys agree it's not too small. Thanks

No embarrassment here... I think you misread my post. I know they need to stop short of the joint, but they stopped way short. And the "gray" is not bare graphite, it too is a coating of sorts. (speaking of the shiny silver coating at the joints which also has pooled on one side) And the chief complaint is that the blue paint was not masked off in a straight line nor applied proper

Well after MUCH anticipation and 3 shipping days (that felt like 3 weeks) my TFO, TICR-X blank arrived today!! But hold the door, the paint job is terrible... substandard at best. They stopped the paint a full 3+ inches from the male ends and left a few inches of the tip section female end unpainted as well. To add insult to injury, the line where they stopped paintin on each section is WAY u

Thanks for the responses. Bill, I actually am looking at the Titan (ringlocks) as one of the options. Any practical differences between them and the Fuji Ti SiC's?

I am wondering if any of you have noticed an appreciable difference in flycasting with different guide ring materials. I'm really having a hard time deciding between Nanolite, SiC and Alconites for my flyrod build. (9 wt) I would prefer titanium frames since it will be used in saltwater occasionally, but the Alconites "seem" more slick to me than SiC, so I assume they will cast great

Sorry for the wording, exactly what I needed. I didn't know if the TLSG 8 was "low" like the TLSG 6 and 7's or if it was "tall" like the TSG 8's (or alconite 8's) Thanks!
