Most of my flies are unweighted and I typically use a 300-400 grain line. I have tied up some tube flies on weighted tubes but have not fished them yet.

Herb I actually installed a 4" butt to utilize a figure 8 at the boat side for Muskie. It helps to really work the flies at the end of the retrieve. I guess I should have asked here first before I tried it. Do you think the guide spacing would be geared more towards an 8'6" rod or 9'.???

You are right I was running a stripper guide and then 2 more guides before my string of fly guides. I am good with less guides but figured I would need to step down gradually from a 20 stripper to 8's. Thanks

I just built the handle portion of my first fly rod. This will be a pike and Musky rod by American Tackle. It is a 2 piece rod that I put a long 6" fighting butt on. I used a winn grip and modified / a rear butt out of a winn fore grip. I was looking at 3 stripper guides before I run the fly guides. Will running the longer fighting butt throw off my spacing.??? I was thinking a 9 foot rod with a 4-5 inch fixed butt. A 9'6" blank would be fine too. I am fairly new at building rods so all info is good info for me...I saw a very cool rod built with winn grips and a one piece 8'10" blank by chippewa river rods.

I am looking at building a 10 weight rod for musky fishing streamers. I have a Sage and an echo but want a dedicated rod with a longer butt around 4 -5 inches... Any blank and component recommendations are appreciated... Thanks Scott

10. Bass rod builds
Going to give a baitcaster and a spinning rod a try. Looking to but the mudhole sale blanks and cheap handle kits. My intentions for these 7' rods will be smallmouth, one is a med power and one is a med lt power. Can you recommend any guide kits for both. I have no clue what size guides I should run. These will be my actual first builds.

Thanks guys for all the advice. I don't travel too much but I fish small to larger rivers on the west coast of Michigan. I like the idea of a 2 inch fighting butt for basic fishing, but also add in a 5 inch butt at times for a heavier line or larger fish.

I am looking at doing my first build. I want to build a fly rod for steelhead fishing. I would like it to be a 10' 7 or 8 wt rod. I would also like to have the option of a removable fighting butt. My idea is using this rod for indicator fishing and also swinging streamers like a switch rod. This could also pull double duty as a smallmouth rod. Any recommendations on a rod blank that is moderate p

I am looking to build my first rod and it will be a Centerpin / Float rod. In doing the individual cork rings, I have watched videos where they put them on a mandrel, glue them together and after sanding ream out the whole handle. I have also observed each individual ring get reamed and fitted on the blank, then the blank itself get spun for sanding the handle. What are the opinions of each techniqu
