I suppose some additional information that I could add is that I am new to fly fishing. This is my first year fly fishing. I have a 3,5, and 6wts for trout fishing currently. And an 8wt for carp fishing. At the moment I have been fishing Rio Big nasty on my 8wt when pike fishing. I would definitely be open to other blank and line options.

I am looking to build a 10wt rod for doing some river fishing for pike and musky. I am looking at the Rainshadow eternity and revelation blanks. The eternity is an xf action and the revelation is a fast. Has anyone fished either of these blanks in a similar fashion with large flies? I have an 8wt revelation right now and it gets the job done ok, but definitely takes some effort to throw large fli

Mudhole sells Pac Bay model SF fly rod guides. They have a color called English bronze, which is a copper look. However, they do not have matching stripper guides in the same color from Pac Bay. In Pac Bay's 2020 catalog I see they have some guides in a TIBRONZE. It looks fairly similar but does not look like the same color. Does anyone know where I may be able to get matching stripper guides

Thanks again for the advice and information everyone. I fished the rod Thursday and Friday with no issues at all and had some great days fishing. Only landed 1 fish Friday but caught 11 Thursday with a couple of really nice browns.

Thank you for the advice everyone! It took a long time but I was slowly able to keep turning and pulling and worked the reel seat off the epoxy underneath. I removed all the old epoxy from the blank, removed the decal and scuffed up the blank with sandpaper. I used some sandpaper around a wooden dowel and cleaned out the inside of the reel seat. I used drywall tape for arbors and then used JB wel

I have a 5wt fly rod that the reel seat came loose on the water. Looks like the failure to remove the decal at that end of the blank was an issue. As I’m in a remote area and don’t have access to any rod bond, is there an epoxy that can be picked up at Lowe’s or home depot that will do the trick once the blank and seat are properly prepped? Thank you!

I will be building a Calstar RT130 5.5 with a bent butt and alps rollers, I wanted to see what type of methods people utilize to static test guide placement on rods this beefy. Any advice or tips would be appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks Grant, that Batson tutorial answered my poorly phrased question which really was if you could flock the grip before installing it on the blank!

When working on a new build and installing an epdm foregrip, what is the best method for applying x flock? The ID of the epdm grip is .6875 and the diameter of the blank above the reel seat is 13/16. I’ve used the method of using some rubber cement to lubricate the blank to slide the grip down into place before, but it make take a little bit more effort this time. Normally I get the grip close t

I have wrapped a decent amount of rods with the bumper method, and each time I have tested them side by side with the same blank wrapped conventionally I would state that they seem to cast just as far if not a bit farther than a conventionally wrapped rod. I have not tried the revolver method due to the success I’ve had with the much simpler bumper method.

You can definitely put another clear coat of epoxy over the first and add more colors to the clear base coat. As Tom pointed out they won’t appear to mingle or blend with the base colors but that can create some cool depth to the marbling. You can also add a little bit of the colors from the first layer of marbling to the colors in the second layer and you’d probably get a pretty nice look.

I have built some spiral wrapped rods with the standard size stripper guide that I would use on a conventional wrap and then all the same size for the running guides at 180 and the bumper at 90 as well. They cast just as well as the same blank conventionally wrapped, and I much prefer the spiral wrap when fighting large fish.

I currently have an alps power wrapper and have been doing very simple guide wraps but am currently working on learning more complex patterns and techniques. The Renzetti carriage seems to have a lot of advantages over the alps carriage. I have seen wrapping videos with people using Renzetti machines, I am just not currently looking to invest a grand or so to upgrade to the Renzetti machine. But

When you grind or file down guide feet do you guys do anything to recoat the guide feet to prevent future corrosion to a degree?

Thanks gentleman that is some good info! I did not use cp, just colorfast thread. I had had someone tell me wrapping it a bit looser not only helps you align the guides but also lets the epoxy penetrate better. So I will file down the feet next time and apply more thread tension! Is it an unrealistic expectation to have no epoxy cracking over time? From looking at every production rod I own th

Hello all,I am new to rod building and recently just completed my first few personal builds. They were 7’ 40-80lb and 50-100lb blanks with alps hxn guides. On my first couple days I landed a couple dozen fish ranging from 80-400lbs. The rods performed great but upon further inspection there is some small hairline cracks in the epoxy at the end of the guide feet on 3 out of 4 rods. I used two diff

Thanks Roger! That amazon link is pretty much the same uxcell motors that I had purchased and installed with applicable transformers. I appreciate the feedback, it is good to know that these motors will perform as needed.

Hi All, I built a couple of drum dryers a few months back, preparing to handle a larger volume of rods being made. I bought Uxcell motors, but now upon further research I cannot find out if they are continuous duty motors. I have read through some discussions on this site and have done some google searching but I haven't been able to find a lot of continuous duty motors that will fit the type of

Hello, I am just getting started in rod building. I have built 6 rods with black Prowrap colorfast nylon thread, and on some rods I used Threadmaster epoxy and on some I tried diamond d2 epoxy. What I have noticed is that the rods with Threadmaster the wraps look pure black with epoxy on them. Whereas the rods with the Diamond epoxy the wraps have a dark blue hue when in direct light or say flash

So I recently built my first two rods and they turned out pretty well. I had marbled various sections of the rods and on some of the larger sections of marbling are still not perfectly smooth as I would like even after a few additional coats of epoxy. I am able to wet sand these areas and work up to a high enough grit where I will not loose the luster of the epoxy? Or do I have to sand these sect

Thanks for the reply's! I will just be building some rods for myself and my brother and I take good care of my gear and even have a pvc rod rack inside of my suv to transport rods without damaging them so like everyone said above sounds like I should be good to go with the forecast guides.

Hello everyone, I am starting on my first rod builds and I am looking to build some xh rods for flathead and blue cat fishing. I want to use black guides just for the overall color scheme, and my question is on guide durability. In the catfish world nowadays, everyone loses their mind over rods that have guides with inserts. Everyone is going with stainless guides without inserts. However, th

Thanks for all the input everyone! I don't know if it makes a huge difference on the size of the stripper guide between 20 and 16, but the reel I will be using will be a penn squall 30LW.

This will be a casting rod, the sizes I included in the original post is what the blank manufacturer recommends for the rod. Honestly this will be the first rod I ever build, and I figured I could probably cut out a lot of the various sizes for the spiral wrap. I was thinking a 20 for the stripper and 10's for the running guides and tip top as stated for leader knots, I guess the two guides that
