Hi Robert, thanks for the reply. Hopefully Chuck can help me out but if not maybe one of those CRB seats would work. I'm really visual.. do you know of any images/photos of builds using either of those CRB seats? Thanks, -MH

I've got a few rods to build for a group fly-in trip in early summer. I was planning to use AERO 16 reel seats (love these seats!) but have discovered they're indefinitely unavailable. Don at AT was kind enough to explain they're working out some issues with the injection molds and that it could potentially be months before these seats are back in production. Sigh... As a result, I'm looki

Thanks Norm, You're spot on about the line sizes and although I don't know for sure on the reels, I'd say those are accurate guesses as well. I'll be able to test cast with about half of the rods but it sounds from your input that I could split the difference on the rest. I was most worried about the placement of the stripper but as I've only built 2 spinning rods didn't realize they were all

Greetings builders, A quick thanks and a question about a new build. I joined you all about a year ago as I was starting my first couple rods. I built a pair of concept rods for myself and my son for last summer's Canadian fly-in trip. They're such great performers they've become (as you all may expect) hands down our favorite rods ever. Thanks to you all for the advice that helped make th

Well, it looks like the "volcano" is actually the least of my problems because my epoxy refused to cure all the way. I'm left with a permanently tacky, mushy surfaces the length of my rod so it's back to square one. Meanwhile, I need to understand why so I can prevent it from happening again. My wrapping/drying rig was in my basement which is on the cool side. Maybe it was below 70d

Hey thanks again all for the suggestions. I ended up making some adjustments at both the reduction train as well as adding another guide near the tip. Test casts were awesome! It's in the dryer now, will post a pic when it's all done. -Mark

I was reading Steve Van Winkle's recent thread about periodic problems he's having with his rod finish. As an aside Steve, hope you get that figured out! As I was reading that thread, I was kind of hoping to hear about what can be done to correct imperfections in the finish that are found too late. I know it's a rookie problem but I'm dying to know if there's a good way to repair a blemish in the

Thanks for the input both of you! Norm, do you test cast after wrapping, or do you trust the guide adhesive that much? Matthew, the Stripper is just a hair under 20" from the end of the spool axle. I'm going to make adjustments tonight per your input and see what the new load test and test casts give me. Thanks, -Mark

Hey everyone, I used Fuji's newer GPS software to come up with guide sizes and layout for my new micro-guide spinning rod but there's a couple spots where something just doesn't seem right. Maybe I'm over-reacting but was hoping you guys could give me some input. Hopefully these photo links will work - the rod is in my static load jig with a weight attached to the tip. I have two spots I want

Have any of you ever dyed cork handles? I have this split grip build started where the handle is made from a combination of light and dark rings. The handle and butt are already epoxied to the blank and turned to size / shape. In isolation, they look great but when I slide on the reel seat, one of those AERO comfort finish seats, well all of a sudden cork pattern just looks, well "off.&q

Ok, I just unpacked a shipment from mudhole for a new casting rod for my son. I'm holding a size 4.5 running guide in my hand and wondering: How in the world do you temporarily fasten these tiny things to the blank so you can wrap them!? In all the videos online that demonstrate guide wrapping, the guy is using a surf rod with guides that are gigantic by comparison and he just tapes it on near th

Thanks again all. I ordered from Mudhole and did ask them to double check the sizes for me but I hate to guess so it was good to get the math formula :) Tight lines, -Mark

Reference: The arborless design on these reel seats is appealing but I'm not certain what inside diameter to order. I can't tell if their ID sizes refer to the size of the overall bore or just the space between the "flaps" on the inside. How do I know what ID size to order if the butt end of my rod is .537" (13.64mm)? Does anyone have any experience with these seats? Thanks

Hey everyone, I'm pretty new to custom building and am just starting a casting setup for crank baits. I need help with guide setup/theory. I'm looking for info explaining how to plan the layout, pick the right guides, etc. I'm relatively up to speed on NGC, KR and microwave guide concepts for spinning rods but I can't find anything similar for casting guides. Am I just looking in the wrong spots

FACEPALM... I looked at the Fenwick link again myself and ... I now see that among the list of touted features it actually SAYS, "Sea Guide reel seat delivers superb strength." Guess I coulda found that out myself after all hehe. Thanks again though Matt.

Hey everyone, Have been planning a couple new spinning rods for my son and I. He's interested in the following two commercial rods because he, "likes the handles." :) I'd like to build him something with the same look and feel but I don't recognize the spinning seats on either rod. Are they available as custom parts or are they manufacturer only items? Here's a couple links:

Thanks Roger, Great advice thanks. I think I'm going to do the compromise and use the 5.5 runners and tip. @#$%&, if it does get clogged in summer, then I'll have an excuse to make another right? Hehe, my wife is gonna end up hating this hobby too :) -Mark

Hi Norm, thanks for the response. Good to hear your experience with the size 4.5s. I wasn't very clear in my first post, it was the tip top I couldn't find in size 5. That blank has a size 5 (2.0mm) tip and for whatever reason, it doesn't seem like Fuji offers that tube size in a 5.0 ring for their tip tops in gunsmoke / SiC. They have 4.5 and 5.5 but not 5.0 - go figure. Just for clarity

Hey everyone, I generated a concept layout for a build I'm working on using the GPS from Anglersresource.net. The blank is a 7' MHX bass rod (MB843) and GPS gave me the following guide sizes: 16 Stripper 8 Reduction 1 5.5 Reduction 2 The software specs out 5 running guides and I'm wanting to use Gunsmoke finished guides with SiC inserts. So here's where I have some qu

This is perfect, thank you Herb. I'll stick with blanks from one of the manufacturers you listed for now. Lance gave some good advice about removing decals that are already on the blank but knowing which manufacturers ship them the way I want at least gives me a chance to avoid some extra finishing steps until I get more comfortable with my new hobby :) Can't wait to get started! Thanks agai

Hey experts, Like many here, I've caught the custom bug and am planning some custom builds for an upcoming fly-in trip this June in NW Ontario. I've been pouring over these forums and can't believe what an active community this. Not to mention what a great resource this forum is! It's nice to think of myself as a contributor some time in the future but for now I'll just thank you all in advance
