I usually drill a 1/4 hole just where the hood meets the seat where the reel foot sits and then rotate the handle 180 and put 1 or 2 1/8 holes to relieve the pressure of injecting the epoxy and then when I see or get a drip or flow I wipe off the excess and tape over them and let it cure over night and ready set go fish the next day . the blank doesn't know that it is a trolling rod or a surf rod if it fits your need build it and try it no reason it wouldn't work as long you don't get silly and try tossing heavier weight

the fighting butt is just that has nothing to do with casting just the fore grip and the placement you have for the stripper is correct the fighting but gives you a bit more leverage on a large fish

well imho that is a lot of heat to apply the wrap and could affect the blank. I would do a wrap with some cord like a guide wrap and coat it with some thinner finish and then apply the shrink wrap over that and you achieve what you want

the best I have found is this stuff Createx Opaque AirBrush Paint and followed up with a thin coat of PG or luma seal you can thin it down to get the cover results you want

some have been making ramps from epoxy putty and forming it right on the blank and smoothing it down to suit and then coating with finish no gaps no fuss no muss

a 5 foot rod would be fine as he will hit a growth spur turning 4 and will be a couple inches taller with that said it will fit him well till he is 9 or 10 yes old but that is just my opinion

Dave this would be a great time to get them involved in rod making get them a kit and help them make their first rods and learn about the craft a good time to have farther and son time something that is rare these days with busy life's , they will learn as well enjoy catching fish with something they built for them selves.
