1. Shooter Rod
I have a friend who is looking for a rod for shooting small jigs up under docks to catch crappie. I am completely unfamiliar with this technique since 90% of my fishing is jigging and bobbering for walleye. One of his fishing partners uses a 6'9" medium light XF rod for this technique. I happened to also have a rod with those same specs build on an MHX dropshot blank that is my main jiggin

3. Re: Epoxy
I use them on all of the ice rods that i build with Tennessee handles. If you aren't to concerned about color go to a local farm supply store and get castration bands for calves. the castration bands cost about 2 dollars per 100 in my area.
Overall they are my favorite way of holding a reel onto a Tennessee Handle and allow for quick and easy reel swaps as well as have no lasting effects or

Planning on putting it on a 6 to 7 foot medium light extra fast blank for walleye jigging.
I plan on giving him the finished rod when he graduates high school this spring.
I never thought about using foam arbors on the inside. I will look into that idea before he starts the process.
I was thinking about having him make it in a split grip configuration to help keep weight down.

5. Wood Handles
I have a brother who is wanting to make a couple wood handles in a shop class. I have no experience with wood handles.
First question is what is a good type of wood to use for handles?
Second is what is the proper way to finish the handle to seal it completely?
Third question should i have him bore a hole to the largest diameter of the blank that each handle will mount too and use tap

SJ783-2-MHX
i have used this mhx blank for 4 builds. all builds have puller bottom bouncers and lindy rigs as well as jigged with a small jig and preformed well.
I like the 2 piece because it fits in the limited storage space in my boat and also will fit in the trunk of my car for days when i fish from shore.

9. Re: Prokote
well after combing a couple different techniques i found one that works a lot better than what i had been doing before.
I was applying too much finish the first time and not taking the extra off.

10. Prokote
when applying prokote over a large area(like over a decal or decorative wraps). How do you prevent small dimples and waves in the finish and get a perfectly smooth finish once it has dried?
Thanks in advance

11. Re: Salmon rod
its a project x seat from mudhole It only comes in a size 16 and 18. I ordered a size 16 because the size 18 looked bad in my opinion

12. Re: Salmon rod
one more question. I ordered a size 18 reel seat but it looks way too unproportional for the handle and the only other size in the seat, in the style, he wants is a 16 which I feel may be too small.
is a size 16 alright or should I stick with the size 18 even though it looks big?

14. Re: Salmon rod
from the sound of it he will be using the rod in the summer around Minnesota with little chance for ice build up on guides.
I guess I will see what i/he think the grips need if anything at all and go from there
thanks for the help

18. Salmon rod
I'm looking for some expert advice on a salmon rod I am building for a friend
it is going to be a 8.5 foot medium heavy rod. his main use is going to be casting lures using 15 pound mono. My Main concern is about what type of guides to use. He mentioned wanting micro guides and I was wondering if a size 5 guide will be too small for this type of set up.
I have never build anything bigger th

i think they are pretty comfortable. I hold the rods in a pistol grip style so i rarely hold onto the handle unless i hook into a decent fish.
At first i bought a pack of the cold snaps so that i could get the tool to put the bands on easier.
I did go buy a bag of the castration bands at the vet supply store. About 2 bucks for 100 bands there instead of buying more of the cold snaps

I use cold snap reel wraps on all my ice rods and have yet to have problems. I like them because it doesn't cover up any of the handle

21. Re: Walleye Rod
For a slip bobber I prefer a 6.5 foot medium blank with a moderate to fast action, paired with larger guide rings to allow the bobber stop to go through the guides with little resistance. i usually use split grips on my rods. I like them more than a standard grip but it is just a personal preference.
I am by no means an expert but almost all the summer rods I build are geared toward walleye ji

First off i'm new to the sight wish I would have found it years earlier. I am still new to the rod building sciences and have many things to learn and questions that need answers
For any of you who have used this type of handle what is the best finish to go over the handle with. I used prokote on one previous handle and I ended up having ripples in the finish. Is there a better option to fini
