Roger that, I have my axis’ marked all the way through. What you’re saying is treat each wrap as it’s own instead of using the same spacing for both of them?

So I mainly build swordfish rods, tuna rods, and you know, the big stuff. I’m about to build a spinning rod for a friend with a split grip. I want to do a chevron fade between split grips and also in front of the fore grip. When laying it out should I find center for each section or act as if it is one Long wrap and find center of the entire thing? I don’t know if I’m making it clear enough but i

No, i'm very careful with my mixing cups and nothing has changed there.... Something got on the rods I guess. I was making two tuna rods identical and they are my problem. In between I did a down rigger rod with no issues.

I have no clue. Is there something I can do about it? I tried using denatured alcohol to wipe the rod down before the next coat but that didnt work ......Any suggestions?

I am using CRB 2 part finish and haven't had any trouble until now.....my last two rods. I'm sure it is not the finish but something ive done to the rod. On almost every guide, the finish wants to run from the blank itself and doesn't want to stick. Also am having trouble with it wanting to egg shell on the thread. what in the world did I do to these two rods that I haven't done before?

Kevin, thanks. I watch all your videos. I have tried to buy abalone from online from you with no reply?

Thanks, I already put epoxy on and I brought it to the edge of the abalone, making sure to tie it in without going over the edge....Then feathered it down the blank for a nice smooth transition. We will see how it goes. I have a few more to do so maybe I will have to get it up over the edge. Great ideas!

That is much better than what I have tried. I'll do that tomorrow. Thanks!

I am building an offshore rod with abalone inlay. I am having a fit because of course the abalone isn't perfectly square around the blank and my tread keeps falling off the edge making it uneven as I wrap. Is there a trick to this? Something has to be simpler than I'm making it. Thanks in advance

Building my first gaff, and since I build all my rods from Calstar blanks figured I'd buy their gaff blank. Its a 6' blank and I have a 4" Winthrop hook. Of course the blank is hollow but tapered towards the end. I don't see even after using a tape arbor how I can epoxy this in to get a good solid long lasting bond..... because of the taper to the blank. Any experience with these blanks? Mud

Thanks for the info! I used metallic silver for the guide wrap and metallic blue for the underwrap. I fiswh out of Venice, La and a few older guys turned me onto WD-40 for wiping down my rods. I saw some older rods that looked really great and they say it helps protect against the sun too. Since then, after I wash down my rods/reels with fresh water, I spray WD on a rag and give them a once over.

Great feedback! I am excited to get started! One more question on the two thin coats...... I wrapped my guides with metallic thread. Everything I read was, don't do this, but I emailed a well respected custom rod builder out of Florida who does use it for heavy offshore rods, and he said its fine. So my question is, do I still only use two thin coats if I double wrapped the guides?

That is the opposite of everything I have read about Prokote. Everything says 24 hours between coats and plenty of working time because it takes SOOOO long to set up.

I have just finished building my first rods. Now is the time to add the finish. I bought Pro Kote from MudHole and all the reviews I read look good, but then I get to the one that says Pro Kote is great, but too soft for big offshore rods like the ones I have built. Is this true? Should I not use this on my Tuna rods? What should I use, and how many coats should I use? I'm scared to mess them up

No, the blank diameter is larger than .875 it does not fit. I have both alps and aftco butts. To get one that fits the blank, it would make it 7 ft

ferrule is .873, and rod butt is .92. The blank is not hollow. It is graphite on the butt end and glass towards the tip. I dont have a smart phone so I cant take pictures and post until I have a friend come do it for me..... I know, Im old school and refuse the smart phone! Wait, I'm only 35, lol

Ok, the brand of blank I wanted was Calstar. I wanted a 6' rod and the company I was buying from told me to get this certain blank for the application. The blank itself is the shortest one they make, 4' 10". Guy said that would get you about a 6' rod. I ordered it, and I ordered butts that would fit the blank; however this put the rod at over 7' long. Without thinking I ordered shorter butts

I am still green, but that will work, if the larger ferrule fits the butts that I have. I have larger butts with ferrules that will fit. When I get home I'll check and see if its all interchangeable. Well now that I'm thinking about it, it won't work because that size ferrule screws onto the butt. Larger ferrule, larger diameter than the butt it screws into. Yeah, probably not an option.

I am building offshore rods, and the butts I want to use on these blanks are small for the butt end of the blank. I hate to cut the rod shorter which I hear changes the action so do I just sand down the end of the blank for a fit? None on this will be see. The ferrule glues on the end then a 12" fore grip on top of that. I can't see after being glued and all how it could possibly hurt the ro

I get it David, but I'm trying to go with a specific color and it isn't in any spray can that would work. I appreciate all the feedback.

Thanks Norman, but Rod Geeks painted blanks aren't quite stout enough. I need some blanks in the 130# class. Thanks for the other info, I'll look into it

I have found a rod I want to duplicate. I want to build a whole set like it. It has a painted blank. I am just scared to paint, I know nothing about it. I hate to put a lot of time and money into something and it not come out right.
