Biggest factors for me are HEAT and DRYER SPEED.
When drying the rod in a cooler house I always place a lamp over my decal as it cured to ensure that area is a bit warmer and it levels out the best.
Second and biggest factor thats most overlooked is the speed of your rod dryer! I started out with something like 20ish rpm dryer and had problems getting that glass smooth finish. Cut the rpms

Is that Japanese product likely just a 2-part urethane automotive clear coat? I too have tried ordering it from Japan however due to the substance its made from they cannot ship overseas.
This method looks way more simple once you get it down than spray painting. We really are behind in that area of expertise.

Title of this post had me worried for a second!
Carol really is the best person to deal through when it comes to rod building. She's usually great about responding so they must extremely busy. Sorry you've been out of luck but I'd send another email.

Might want to consider a blank with a larger tip diameter than those you mentioned. I've found that I'm not a fan of fishing a rod with too light a tip while I'm twitching. The tip needs to be stout enough to "pop" a 1/2oz jig or heavier on a long cast and a lighter rod just won't move the jig enough.

I mix over a heater or stove top. Best method I've found to avoid bubbles when mixing my hand.

I have nothing against carbon fiber but for this build the aesthetics call for cork!
Bob that grip from mudhole is what inspired me to make this thread. I just ordered one and it showed up with gaps in the cork and I just can't bear to use it on this current build. So I'm seeking an alternative.
I will look into the Matagi grips

Thanks Norman but perhaps I didn't specify. I am referring to a cork handle

I have a very nice rod I'm about to make and the quality of the cork on the premade Fuji grips just doesn't do it for me. Is there on here who is able to make custom grips that fit these seats? I would imagine cutting the grip to fit the seat could prove difficult but just thought I would ask. Or if someone knows of another source that would work too.
Thanks, Denham

10.5" grip has to feel weird on a rod that length. I would stick to the classic 14" grip for your rod because I doubt the extra couple inches of "beef" is going to be worth it when casting and balance is awkward.

Herb, I appreciate the offer but I will contact them myself and look into it!
Also thanks everyone for the recommendations. I checked out Meiser and the link above, those are all the caliber reel seat I'm looking for. Now I think my customer might have too many options to consider!

Herb,
I saw that seat before but says on their site it's only available in walnut. Would be ideal if all their options were available.

16. Spey Reel Seats
Building a spey rod for a customer and he wants a reel seat that is going to make the rod look special. Something with a wood insert to give it a classic look that some might describe as "beautiful". Can somebody point me in the direction of where I can find such a seat? Have searched online and am having trouble finding larger reel seats that aren't solid aluminum.
Thanks, Denham

After fiddling with the Cagey Hook method I've noticed something.
Isn't the line flow only straight during a slight bend in the rod? Because once the rod get flexed down into the backbone then surely the line flow can no longer become a straight path or else the butt guide would have to be much closer to the reel I figure.
This also makes me wonder, how would this method work on a slow acti

Check out the Rainshadow BP1025. That line of blanks make some of the best salmon downrigger rods

All very intriguing! I emailed Tom about the article so hopefully I can get my hands on it shortly.
One question tho. How do you go about determining guide size for the stripper and transition guides?

Gentlemen thank you so much for your advice I'm starting to finally have an idea of how the layout for this rod should be.
One of my takeaways so far is to lose the size 25KW, I can do that no problem. And I will start with the 30 at about 33" out and space the other guide how Brandon recommended!
As for what this gentleman is fishing for... it's actually pretty comical. My friend live

I did the 27x method and the choker guide spaced out at 80 inches from the reel seat which was much further than expected and was only about 2ft from the tip section. Then on that line I ran down the size 30 KW and it was spaced about 40 inches from the reel seat. That also had me scratching my head.... GPS had the butt guide too close and the 27x had it too far. Unless one of those sounds right

So I'm building a heavy 11ft surf rod for a friend of mine using Fuji KW guides. The set I have is 30-25-20-12-8s to the tip.
The problem I'm having is where to put the first guide and so forth. The reel will be a size 6500 Daiwa with 65lb braid so in the GPS I clicked on the Saltist 6500H with KW guide system and it says a size 30 KW should go 18.5 inches from the front of the reel seat. Sure

SK2 does in fact not work with the ECS reel seat. Doesnt tighten enough to keep the reel snug. Just found that out the hard way!

Why not send them a finished rod so they know the potential of what can be done when its built by someone who knows what they're doing? Or did they insist on building it themselves

Its literally one sticker and it can't even be traced to who printed it nor would it ever attract the attention of Harley Davidson... It would be one thing if I were selling the sticker to make a profit but just to have causes no harm in anything.
