Hello, I’m building this rod as a graduation gift to my college fishing clubs president, and the other members decided they want it to have recoil guides. I’ve never worked with recoils before, so I was wondering if anyone could give me a recommendation on how many/ what size to order. The blank is going to be a MHX mb874. I’m thinking using sz. 6 or 7 for the runners because they want a “sem

Hello, This past weekend my ARE UHM12 13’ 7/8wt Spey build violently exploded as I was trying to pull a 20lb+ king salmon towards shore with a heavy 12lb tippet instead of my normal 8-10lb **my fault**, so I am back in the market for a Spey or switch blank, and unfortunately anglers roost enterprise is no longer taking orders according to their website so getting the same blank is out of the qu

This rod is beautiful with an up locking vss, I like it so much I may have to try and mimic some aspects of it. How can I get a locking nut/hood assembly like that? The cabin fiber thread covers and aluminum caps I found look like they're only compatible with sk2 seat parts

I might try out the airwave set then, since they're the basically the same as the micros just cheaper. As far as the grip goes, I thought I was set on doing the custom one, but the more I think about it I'm not sure. Since I don't know what reel he'll use and how it sits specifically, it's possible that there would be a "gap" between parts of the seat that would probably be not so c

I've build a few rods before, just not a spinning rod. needless to say i was pretty shocked that there isn't more information on the topic out there because when i built my float, spey, and casting rods i found recommended sizes right away. The Airwave set doesnt sound like a bad idea.

Hello, i have searched and searched and have not been able to find anything that is of much use to me. i hate to add another "guide size..." thread but would really appreciate some help. 1- I would like to use the more modern guide concepts, but i am building this rod as a gift and do not know the exact reel that will be used. I was guessing a #25 stripper to be safe since he will p

Thankyou everyone for the information, I actually just purchased a used daiwa tatula for $50 on a different forum, from an older gentleman that was kind enough to help a younger angler by giving the deal of the century. But, I would like to keep this post going as there is tons of information and advice being brought up that I'm sure will prove useful to somebody else in the future.

i decided on the MB843. Also, instead of making it to match my other builds (fancy cork pattern with red cedar) im making it my college colors; as we were just approved for a bass fishing club and will be doing tournaments and such. But, now i need a reel, any suggestions? (if this isnt allowed because its a rod building forum i understand). id need it to be a left hand retrieve baitcaster and on

I think I'm between the MHX MB842 and 843 both in the 2 peice models. Has anyone had experience with these blanks? All depends how they actually "feel" vs the ratings on paper, I don't want it to be too light that it cant handle a 3/4oz spoon against current, or too stiff that I can't cast lighter weight plastics

I am playing around with the idea of building either a casting or spinning rod to go with my matching spey and centerpin combo, making it a trio. It will be used for throwing spoons/spinners for salmon/steelhead in the winter-spring and for (mostly) texas rigged plastics and maybe some spinner/jerk baits for bass/pike in the summer-fall. I've been looking at the MHX series because the price is ri

Thankyou everyone for the input. On a side note, how much finish would i need to do both a 14ft rod and 13ft? im guessing that the preloaded seringes of ProKote that i have will not be enough for both rods.

Hello, as I have come to the thread finishing portion of my builds, I have hit a wall.I have prokote I bought from mudhole, and the recommended curing temperature says 70-80°. Problem is, nights in WNY aren't going to get much warmer than 60 for quite some time yet. My mother hates the smell of regular epoxy fumes, and says it makes her throat swell, so I can't do it in the basement unless it dos

Hello, I have yet to actually turn the grips yet, but I'm building 2 rods that have .5 -3.5 inch sections of red cedar as accents. What are some good finishes/sealers I can use on the wood? The rods will be fished quite a bit so my main concern is protecting the wood from swelling or anything else that could happen from heavy use. Anything that brings out the natural color and protects it will be
