Matt it really depends on the materials or brands of materials, hard to say you may want to do a few a make build sheets, record materials and figure it that way.

Roger Yes I just installed LED Lights in my shop and they are awesome, shop is very bright, has made a big difference Yes I'm to the point of wearing 2.0 Reading glasses, a little frustrating considering a few ( 10 ) years 20/20 or better vision No I've been wanting to get a head mounted magnifier and it looks to be in my near future, Thank you I will certainly look into these and very

I have a couple guide questions. I have several Rods to build and considering all thats going on why not build them now but after looking at my on hand guides I would have to miss match them defeating my idea. I'd like to build them all as consistant ( same guides ) as possible. These are all casting rods for freshwater large mouth bass and since my ole eyes are not what they used to be, I leanin

David you are welcome, and I certainly get your point. My Buddy fishes lots of Tournaments a year, FLW, Costa and other opens and has been using the Famous White BD Rods that have very small micros for guides so he is familiar with tiny guides, I think he's fished those rods the last 2-3 years. I may not convince him to go up in size and if not we will build his new rods with the tiny micros. I p

David I understand, and like you said the customer is always right......unless he is isn't. But in this case, I know the guy well and will certainly suggest he reconsider or at least try a rod with that long of a handle. One thing about building such a handle, if he decides it's to long it can always be shortened, thus my suggestion he sticks with an 8' blank, so he would still have a legit flipp

Roger, you are so right, I've even found myself using a longer handle rod and enjoying it. I built myself a Crankbait Rod with a Full Cork 10" Handle and really enjoyed throwing Deep Diving Crankbaits with it. I've also talked to quite a few guys that say a lot of the production rods being built today have handles that are to short, and the split grip rods seem to be loosing some popularity

Thanks for your input, after talking to my buddy who wants the 14" handle he wants it on one of the Flipping Rods, said he is using a Rod now with a 10" handle and likes it, said he uses it to flip and likes to have the extra length handle to rest on his forearm and side. The other guy I think I have convinced to go with 4 or 4.5" runners as the 2 & 3's seem very small, especi

I've got a few Flipping Rods to build and have a few questions. First Rod the guy wants Micro Guides, the second rod he wants Standard Guides for Cold weather use. Any suggestions on guide spacing for the difference in guide trains? I've thought about using the static test, but would you start / end at the same point ( length ) from reel. Then I have a buddy wanting a Flipping / Pitching Rod

Dan seems you are off to a good start, here are a few things that I've picked up on from a few other custom builders and my own experience. Grips are a personal thing mostly, but can be a deciding factor if your selling your rods. You might want to use preformed or proven grip sets. A lathe of some sort, from simple to full blown wood lathe, but they do help if you are into turning your own gr

Thanks guys, I've been doing quite a bit of research this week and we are suppose to get together tomorrow evening. The reason I mentioned the Phoenix blanks was I've got several customers that swear by their cranking blanks, but like other brands for other applications. But after comparing quite a few blanks they are all fairly close in numbers, the one thing I know he is a stickler on is war

Thanks Randy & Doug, I will look into both of those and give him a few options. I was looking back in my log book and built another guy a MHX Blend crankbait rod last fall, it turned out very nice and he was more than happy with it. I have a Bushido blank, Jig rod in house right now and it seems very nice as well. I'll know more about it after the rod is finished but it's a MB73 certainly a p

Lawrence in short, you can get a guide placement chart, but I recommend static testing the blank/rod, you can do a search here or on google static testing rods and it should help. Each blank is slightly different and the static test is the best way to find your guide placement. Guides are personal preference, it's whatever you like best, there are a lot of good guides being made today, as far as

I have a few questions and would like to hear the members opinions, experience. First off I have a good customer, friend who is really into fishing crank baits, in the past he has followed the Glass Rod thoughts, but recently he has switched to liking Graphite or blended rods more so than the all glass rod. So this weekend after fishing 4 days straight he calls me on way home from the lake and wa

Anyone know of a supplier who offers a split grip with Cork & EVA split grips, I have a buddy looking for this type of grip on a few of his new builds. I could always build or make the grip, but thought I'd ask if maybe anyone already offers such a grip assembly pre made. What he's looking for came on a Kistler Cranking Rod he likes really well, it has cork split grips with a very small EVA B

David, Thank you for taking the time to explain this to us, and I have to agree. What I wanted to know has been answered in great detail here and I appreciate it. I have several rods with MVT reel seats as well and like them equally, when asked about a grip on a casting rod, I agree 100% it's personal preference, but in this case I have a client that likes to push the envelope and is always seeki

David very good post and information. Thank you for sharing it with us. I agree balance is a key factor, probably more so than total weight. I will try to explain this to my guy, we had a pretty good talk yesterday and I was able to share some insight with him. After talking he informed me he has several Helium LTA Rods and that's what really turned him onto the light weight rods. He prefers cork

Roger, I appreciate the info, but like my original post he wants the lightest rod he can get, built with either cork, carbon fiber, Winn or eva grips. I sent him an e-mail and he will be putting a Revo MGX, or team Lews light @ 5.6oz He is OK with the Winn grips but was worried about the sensitivity compared to say premium grade cork? I personally would like to see the rod get carbon fiber grips,

David it's a Jig Rod, this guy fishes jigs 90% of the time and has several custom rods, and usually has 1-2 built a year. On this rod he was hoping to have it built around 3.5 oz, but stressed he would like it to be as light as possible yet still perform, thus my reason for asking about the handle weights. Thanks

Thanks Tom, That's what I was thinking, any idea of what the weight savings would be using the Carbon Fiber skinned grips over the others? I don't have all the components at this time or I would assemble and weigh them, I have a friend wanting me to build him the lightest build possible, so I'm trying to get ideas to share with him before we start the build. Thanks again. I appreciate it.

I would like to know on a casting rod, what is the lightest handle configuration, I'm mainly interested in the following handles. 1. Split Grips in Cork, EVA, Carbon Fiber, & Winn grips or combinations of these. 2. Full Handles in Cork, EVA, Carbon Fiber, & Winn Grips. If you know what each of these weigh that would be awesome, trying to make a decision and weighing all the optio
