I built a 10'6", 10-40 lb blank into a really nice pin rod for chinook. Hooked and landed a 35lb chrome fish this fall on it. Lots of fun to play tug of war with big chinook on the pin. Good luck!

If you want the tube to fit snug in the #16 aero you need an OD of .965. I believe the .920 ID tube will get you in the ball park. Good luck.

I have an insert here for the #17 PTS. It weighs 2 grams the reel seat weighs 24 grams. Once the insert is epoxied into the PTS the MVT is still about .0.3 oz heavier. I' probably shouldn't spend so much time weighing everything. :D You do save a lot of time during assembly by using the MVT. The MVT does have a smaller profile and more solid feel.

The Fuji PTS weighs 0.8 oz. If I remember correctly the MVT weighs around 1.2 oz or a little more. The profile of the MVT is smaller than the PTS as well. Both are nice seats.

He also uses shaped carbon fiber grips on his rods. Pretty cool to see some very good bass pros trying them!

Just get this type of live centerl It holds your mandrel slightly inside the tail stock on a 60 degree point and keeps the mandrel from whipping or coming out.

I know it's moisture curing but from all of our testing heat affects it as well. I'm on the west coast and the humidity is 70%-80% recently. I can take a batch of grips and permagloss them when the temp is around 55 degrees (80% humidity) and the grips will be perfect. I can then heat the shop up to 80 degrees and permagloss a batch of grips and every one of them will have small pin hole air b

Try to apply permagloss at a cooler temperature. If its to warm the permagloss surface will start to cure to soon and will trap the gasses that need to escape during the curing process. We like to permagloss when its very cool or run the AC in the summer. Give it a try and hopefully it helps you.

I have noticed that carbon fiber over foam grips to be warmer in the winter. Initially they are slightly colder than cork but as you hold the grip I believe the foam absorbs and holds onto the heat from your hands. You can hold the grips up to your cheek in the winter after holding the grips for a while and you will feel the heat. Kind of cool for us West Coast steelhead fisherman.

CFX grips are lighter than cork. CFX core material is different than what is commonly used (pour foam) for these types of grips. It is the weight of 4 lb pour foam but has the compression strength of 7 lb foam.

I should have been more clear. The carbon fiber grip pieces are 11 grams total. When you add the EVA butt cap to the mid and rear carbon fiber grips the total weight is 14.5 grams. A CFX 10" full carbon fiber grip weighs 17 grams. Not sure the weight of a similar size cork grips as I don't have one here to test.

I just weighed a CFX Composite Grip set which is a carbon fiber over carbon infused foam core. For a casting split grip set they weigh 11 grams. The 4" mid split grip for casting rods is 8 grams and the 2.5" rear butt grip is 3 grams. The Fuji EVA butt cap is 3.5 grams so the total for a split grip setup is 14.5 grams. This should give you a ballpark figure of weight for carbon fibe

I normally use a dremmel to make a cutout. A sharp bit on a lathe should work well too. I have not tried the crafty cutter tool but think that it might work. Let me know if you try the crafty cutter, I am curious it ti works. Thanks. We do not inlet them before shipping to Mud Hole to keep the costs as low as possible for rod builders.

True, there is nothing magical about carbon fiber, its just a conductive material. A conductive material (graphite) will better transmit vibration or energy than an insulating material (cork, EVA, fiberglass, polyurethane). If we could make a cork tube the same diameter, weight and wall thickness as a graphite tube the graphite tube would transfer more energy than the cork tube. A lot of the a

All good comments. I believe the carbon fiber adds to the sensitivity of the grip and rod. Common polyurethane pour foam while more rigid and dense than cork is not really any more sensitive than cork on its own as its an insulating material. You can test this by taking a shaped foam core, cover it in epoxy (so it is protected) and put it on a blank and see how it feels in your hand. Do t

A carbon sleeve over foam can be just as strong as a CF hollow tube. Carbon sleeve when used correctly has very good compression strength. Not sure how either would work as an extension though.
