Hi Mark,
Thanks for the reply. I will be using a a Quantum Accurist S3 baitcast reel (levelwind). The rod is rated for 8-16lb braid, i will be running 10lb.
Some more info after fiddling with it again last night:
I moved the stripper back out to 19 where i had it originally. But i left the shortened transition from top to bottom, with 5in of spacing between the Stripper > 2nd > 3rd

Hi Guys,
Im building an acid wrap casting rod on a Black Hole 691UL Blank. Im sure anyone who has used this blank know its got a very parabolic bend.
Ok So here is what i have come up with.
I put the stripper 16in from the reel face. I tried 19 but the rod is starting to get some bend at that point. I spaced the fist bumper 4 in at 60deg. I spaced the next one 4 in up at 120 deg, and

Thanks for that info Lance. When it comes to spacing, is there a standard formula?

Thanks all for the feedback.
I have read that I should use double foot guides for the transition as well. Is taht the case or ar you suggesting i use the KBs for that?

Apologies, I should have been more clear. I stated UL mainly due to the blank i was thinking of using (Black Hole Challenger Bank 691UL). We can omit UL from the original thread and if anyone has another blank suggestion im all ears. Im simply looking to build a spiral wrapped rod capable of handling 1-2oz jigs in 80ft of water. I have everything picked out except the guides. Which im completely

Im looking to build an UL Acid wrap rod. Its primary use will be from vertical jigging lake trout with jigs up to 1-2oz
Im looking at the Black Hole Challenger Bank 691UL, unless anyone has a better suggestion for this application?
I have decided to go with titanium guides. However im lost when it comes to sizes. If anyone has any suggestions it would be very much appreciated.

I thought about moving the seat, but didnt want to be dealing with 2ft of rod behind the reel. I know thats pretty standard for surf rods. But not what i was looking to do.

9. Rod Balance
Im curious how important you guys feel having the rod balance at the reel stem is? I just finished up a light 9' surf rod for myself. In order to get the rod to balance at the reel stem I needed to add about 6.5oz off the butt end. The rod its self weight 7.4oz. Is it worth almost doubling the weight to balance the rod?

I planned to start my wrap at the butt end of the female end for the ferrule. I figure this will allow me to get the wrap right up to the edge without having to worry about the whip Finnish at the end messing anything up.

The female ferrule diameter is 1/2in. So ill do a 3/4in wrap just to be on the safe side.

15. Build Critique
With the help of many here I have narrowed down my search for my Light Surf Rod build. This rod will be primarily used for shore fishing freshwater lakes that only allow for shore shore fishing. However it may also see some use in the salt when on vacation, etc.
For a blank i went with the 9' Lami SSU108-2ML. Rated for 3/8-2oz.
I will be using 3000-4000 sized reel with 20-30lb braid. (most li

18. Blank Info
Hi Guys,
Still on the hunt for a blank to build a light surf rod on. I plan to toss pluggs and jigs 1/2oz - 1 1/2oz (2oz max)
The two blanks im looking at are the MXH SU1085F and St Croix 2M90MHF2. Does anyone here have experience with either of these blanks and know if they would handle what im looking to toss?

I was looking at the MHX SA1086 3/5-2 1/2OZ. How well does the 1085 handle the upper end of its weight range?

Yes it is a shimano reel (Spheros SW). I plan to use 15-30lb braid for a line. I will pick up the next size up guides just to be on the safe side. Thanks.
Any suggestions on a different blank? Distance is key for this build, since some of the places i fish from shore do not allow boats. I would say hte largest bait ill be throwing is 1.5oz.

22. Light Surf Rod
Hi All,
Im looking to build my first surf rod using the SS1025. It will pull double duty for freshwater shore fishing as well, slinging metals and jigs up to 1oz. It will have a 4000/5000 size reel.
For guides I plan to go with the KR series from 20H > 10H > 5.5M > (8x) 5 BKBAG runners to the top.
I plan to have the reel stem at roughly 18in from the butt. (unless there is somet

Also, how much is to much to cut off the butt end of a 2pc rod? I found a great blank but its a 10'. Is it ok to cut 12in off the but end to get it to the length i want?

26. Fly Blank
Hi all,
Im trying my hand at building a 6wt fly rod for freshwater bass fishing. Ive been looking around for blank suggestions. Casting distance will be key, as the place i fish has very clear water and the fish are easily spooked. I gotta be able to reach them from a distance. Any suggestions are very much appreciated.

Check out the UL Liberty blanks at Getbit. They are a great blank at a great price as well.

I second the Liberty blanks, i have a rod I just cant put down built on the P703-USA. Check them out for sure.

Larry,
I just built a very similar rod using the 7ft Liberty P703-USA blank. I primarily use it for tossing Wacky Rigged Senkos. Its an excellent blank made right here in the USA. Also has a LIFETIME guarantee. Ive landed Walleye, Small Mouth, Largemouth, and small pike on it.
Total weight is 9.8oz with the reel spooled with line. Went with cork handles to keep weight down and more sensiti
