Thanks Grant, exactly what I was looking for. I have built quite a number of rods but still far from being accomplished; as mentioned in earlier posts I was checking to see if maybe there was something I may have missed; I use FlexCoat light , in view of all of the responses to my post I think I will stick with it. Thanks again Grant and stay safe, Mike

Tom Kirkman, I am far from being an accomplished rod builder however; I have built in excess of 25 so I have some experience with mixing Epoxy. I have done my do diligent in the past, I am familiar with most of the dos, and don’ts of mixing Epoxy for thread wraps. However if one is being forthright, I believe, it would be difficult to disagree with mixing Epoxy is not as simple as “do it corr

Thanks Roger, I was surprised to learn that only an idiot can’t mix epoxy without bubbles ????. I have used the heart method with good success but sharing your one coat method is a great deal of help. I do use metal foil because I thought it extends the working time, do you think this wrong? In my original post the intent was simply asking if there may be a product out there that I wasn’t awa

Thanks for your reply, however I was hoping for a comparison with some of the other thread finishes such as Flex Coat, ProKöte or another finish which may be preferred by most. I have been using Flex Coat low build and it works ok however I am trying to determine if there may be a better option. The U-40 Dura Gloss is advertised to be totally bubble free without the use of heat; this is quite a

Hi Tom, The applications were +/- 24 hours apart, the area was small and I did have it appear in two different places. I did give John a call and spoke to an associate because John was unavailable, he agreed with John that it was some type of oil or silicon contamination. Thanks to all for the quick response and help, I certainly appreciate this forum and everyone’s willingness to help!

Any ideas on why applying a second or third coat of low build Flex Coat epoxy will not cover or adhere to an area; any and all thoughts and ideas are greatly appreciated?

I have a 2 piece 9' #8 IM-Gen 2 North fork composites blank, I would appreciate help with guide sizes and spacing. I have built a number of spinning and casting rods but this will be my first attempt at a fly rod build. I went to the North fork composites web site for guidance with little or no info available. The fishing application primarily will be Texas / Louisiana coast with occasional trips

I finally complete the rod handle that all of you helped me with so much, if anyone is interested; I posted a picture in the photo gallery "My First Rod Handle. It obviously isn’t close in quality to what the experienced folks are doing but I am quite pleased with the results, thanks again to all who were willing to share their time with helping me.

Thanks again to all for sharing your time and experiences, they are a great deal of help! I thought the use of plumbers Teflon on the mandrel is a great idea. Since an overwhelming number of folks use the Titebond III I purchased some today and will use it to glue the cork rings together. I made some BURL Burnt Cork inlays in the cork rings for the handle I am building so I am very grateful to Ro

I used Elmer’s Carpenter’s WoodGlue Max to build the inlay cork rings; it purports to be waterproof, heat and mold resistant, stainable and suitable for interior or exterior use. Is this ok to use to glue the rings or do I need to get the Titebond III; it really makes no difference to me I can get the Titebond III, I just happen to have the Elmer’s? Thanks all for the advice and support.

I am making my first attempt at building a custom rod handle. I am planning on using all-thread, large washers held in places nuts on each end of the cork once the epoxy glue is applied. Is there anything I can apply to the all-thread to keep epoxy from adhering should some inadvertently leak through? Any help and or advice are greatly appreciated!

While applying a second coat of epoxy to the guides of my new build I discovered a small drop of cured epoxy on the blank. Is there any method of safely removing this without damaging the blank or would it be best to leave it in place? Thanks, Mike
