Thanks for getting me started Tom. I remember the day my Wife wanted to go the Barnes and Noble and I didn't. I found your Rod Building book and was shocked when I discovered you were in Highpoint. I looked you up and called only to be surprised that you quickly invited me over to your shop to help get me started on this path of Rod building. I attended the show this weekend and saw you pass by a

I'm going to build 6 80 lb chair rods for Marlin and didn't know if I should purchase guides with bearings or bushings. I would like to hear others thoughts on this. Thanks

If I do it, I would wrap it over cork and use a contact cement to adhere it. I would also bind the ends with thread and seal that with rod finish. I will be building 6 80lb boat rods for chair fighting so sensitivity won't be a issue.

I have always used a " Glue Stick" without any problems. I do a lot of offshore bottom fishing and at times I have to replace the rod tip due to someone winding the large bottom rig into the tip with a electric reel. It sure is easy to melt the glue and replace a tip. I would think Epoxy could cause delamination of the blank if not done right.

I coat my entire blanks on my Offshore rods so the blank is protected. The extra weight on them doesn't matter to me and I actually prefer the slower action.

I recently did this to a set of 50 lb class boat rods that had a lot of hours on them. I first used a damp rag and cleaned the rod. I then scuffed them with a red Brillo pad before I coated the rods. they almost looked new.

When I put rod finish on my tip wraps I like to let the finish run over the tip tube just a little for some extra adhession.

I feel the same way but didn't know what others do. I want to be able to easily remove the tip if it ever needs to be replaced. Thanks for everyone's input.

I have cutting slices off the glue stick , pushing them down into the tip tube and then heating/melting the glue before I push it onto the blank.

How do you do it for heavy offshore rods? Do you use Epoxy or a glue stick?

I can't seem to get my cross points on my butt wraps centered on my real seat. When I'm half way through I look down the blank and it's always off to the side. What is the trick?

I found it and the dryer in the floor this morning and the 2nd. coat of finish messed up. Can I sand it and put another coat on to fix the blemishes?

I guess that does make since that it will only rust if water i getting in mixing with air. I think the best thing to do is just cut them off and rewrap.

Do any of you coat them with anything after you have filled them down to prevent rust mainly in a saltwater environment? I have one rod I built that the guide feet rusted on.
