Folks it's been quite sometime since I've been on the forum and submitted a post, so I'm going to admit and request directions to view any replies to my recent post regarding EC foregrip medallions I'm having trouble viewing replies, and can only view my post

Most definitely get the best you can afford, I got the Grizzly Hobby Lathe, unfortunately the drill they show on the box is no longer available, I stepped up to a 6amp Dewalt not bad but tried to use a variable speed hookup and the voltage was compromised also the collar on the drill needs to fit the grizzly lathe and this was fairly snug. I've managed to use this but with some degree of issues.

Ian I understand your dilemma, I too have family heirlooms that I pretty much leave as I've rec'd, an individuals choice. Also the feeling of a restore and I made it myself, having 1 son and 1 grandson it's good to know these things may or may have value to them but knowing that I passed it on down whatever was done is a personal thing. Now the post about attending a class perked my attention, Mu

Thanks to all for your comments and suggestions. I should be able to piece together a couple lathes beds with with some t-track and jig knobs to get myself setup. I guess I'm heading toward the 3 bed setup-- one for wrapping, one for drying, and one for fabrication and restoration of grips. I ordered the Pac Bay model RDM-1 dryer from Janns Netcraft, they have a decent selection of components tha

Thanks gentlemen, I did pickup the hobby lathe from grizzly their drill is no longer available but a Dewalt 6amp corded drill fits the lathe. I was needing to have a variable speed control so I went MLCS catalog and got their router control 20 amp. Does the trick however there is a clicking at low rpms and my neighbor looked it over and feels that the speed control is lowering the apmerage and n

I'm trying to piece together a small lathe or wrapping motor or any motor actually that I can mount a chuck to and shape or restore cork grips that are still on old rods. I guess you could call it restoration of vintage rods w/o changing their original look. I realize that components may not be available but there are reasonable substitutes. I have a power wrapper but I'm wanting to avoid getting

Several months ago my son ordered and paid for one of these holders so I could use it in my winder. It was ordered through swampland tackle, shortly thereafter on the website this item comes up out of stock. Now I'm not going to trash these guys but after numerous attempts to contact both backlash and swampland with no luck my son is out his money and we haven't received the holder or any type of

Chips gouges, places on one where mice had chewed around the grip. Was just wondering what was being used, I see mudhole sells an Elmers product, I'm sure someone has another item. I'm not looking to take away from the natural look of the cork, I prefer the look of cork anyway, and I actually try to salvage vintage rods from flea mkts,@#$%&, yard sales. Just have seen lots of grips that could us

On this subject of cork and cleaning and finishing, I have a question regarding the restoring of damaged cork grips. What is the preferred item to repair damaged grips that actually do not need replaced but just filling and patching. I have a few vintage rods with cork grips that could use a touch up in places and also one last question is when to leave well enough alone.

Great info appreciate the response, you guys especially the innovators that have created so much to the craft can't say enough thank yous. I'm a very newbie/probie and really am trying to make a go of this whether it be new rods or refurbishing vintage rods, I am learning so much and applying it to my projects. For instance, when I screwed up on my sons rod, which was my first build, not getting

Yes and no to the grip examples, the grip I have is on an older Fenwick glass casting rod. It seems to be from the 70's,kind of that honey gold or yellow I think it was called. The reel seat is cast with a trigger below and on the side is a manufacturer logo cast into the side of the seat stating Fenwick Westminster, Ca. The rear cork grip is tapered straight and angles down slightly from the bac

I am trying to figure out how to make a pistol grip holder to fit my ATC wrapper. I 've seen the one from Swampland tried to contact them but the mail box was full. Can there be a holder fashioned from PVC pipe and what do I need to consider---Thank You. This is for a vintage Fenwick rod that I had sent a post in approx 1 week ago give or take.

Well as I was surfing thru the net I had gotten into the Fenwick.com and read some history. I'm wishfully thinking but in scrutinizing the blank and where the company logo would be as well as the rod particulars it almost appears as though the word Grizzly is part of the line under the Fenwick bird(?). As I said it's wishful thinking, however does it seem unlikely that a west coast rod could make

Hello everyone in my outings scouring fleamkt back corners for older rods to practice on I've come across a Fenwick casting rod. The color is I believe they called it honey yellow, anyway the most important info that is usually on the rod blank has been nearly rubbed off however the reel seat is cast with the Fenwick name and westminster location I'm trying to find guides for the rod, there is on

My followup to the tacky epoxy, I removed everything and started over, rewrapped (still having the problem of getting the thread locked) mixed 5cc total of flexcoat stirring with my modified popsicle stick for about 2 1/2 minutes. Prior to the mixing I had set the 2 bottles in a sunny window for about 5 minutes, made them fairly runny but anyway applied the new mixture to the new thread wrap 24

Thanks to everyone I will take all advice and proceed but with a different outlook. It's obvious that I've put some pressure on myself and this has overshadowed everything. The addiction part is already creeping in, I guess that has affected me also, I want to learn all I can w/o delays and so forth but if I don't settle down and relax keep at it'll be a long road. I've gone to flea mkts and gott

OK I did the thumbnail test and the finish pulled up, so how do I go about getting the tacky epoxy off or is that where I just cut trough the wrap and peel it off will I need to prep the surface of the rod before I rewrap. I think I've understood my mixing dilemma now its just getting the rod ready to start from scratch. My reason for the intensity of the questions is this is my first build, it i

Requesting a clarification on the removing and starting from scratch direction, I'm not sure how to approach or actually what the process is to complete this---will this compromise the rod will I need to rewrap the hook keeper, the epoxy has penetrated the threads will the color be affected if the threads come off will the rod need to be prepped---sorry for all the skeptical questions obviously e

Thanks for the great info, no doubt I was trying to be frugal and not waste any epoxy, paid the price for that thinking. So now as mentioned using DA which I'm assuming is denatured alcohol, how do I go about removing the first application w/o compromising the threads and rod, should I apply generously using q-tips paper towels rags etcetera--obviously I'll be mixing better.

Being a first time rodbuilder there was some anxiety and intimidation with the process and end result. I've purchased Toms book subscribe to rodbuilder mag and have watched some youtube. my first challenge is getting the initial wrap on to lock the thread in place, I have a power wrapper but hand wrap where I feel I need more control but still haven't mastered the cross locking setup. Is my rotat

I have a couple fiberglass rods I'm guessing from the 70's and have started to do the same project however there didn't appear to be any finish on the threads. Since I had planned on rewrapping it didn't matter but when I cut tthru that thread talk about brittle some of it just broke off----that may happen if your orginal finish is thin in places resulting in the rewrap I 'm still very new at thi

Thanks guys for all of the views have been reading a lot of the topics and comments on the site I'm jumping in by salvaging some old I believe fiberglass spinning rods all have cork handles. My questions are how to make the fiberglass and cork cleanup look nearly new and practice wrapping thread and putting on new finishes kind of like bringing them back to life they still will have an aged look

Hey guys hope all have survived the holiday and shopping I have 3 questions on 3 different areas: 1) How are the treadles built and linked up to operate the foot pedal I'm seeing underneath some of you alls benches, it obviuosly lets you move left and right and still activate the wrapper 2) Recommended componets to build a rod for spoonbill fishing. 3) Are the small cans of catfood,
