I like the feel of Winn grips but won't use them anymore. The skins are wearing off and they are looking pretty rough. Used them on fly, surfcasting, and bottom rods. All show wear after one season, but the bottom fishing rod is the worst. Luckily my customers prefer cork, shrink and EVA. Otherwise I would be replacing grips.

X2 Lynn, be careful test fitting. The carbon shell will scratch your blank.

I agree with grant. 25 should be fine but what size is the reel and what type of line are you using? As Phil said "the devil is in the details". I've used 25 and I've used 30 stripper guide with braid because of the size of the reel spool. With braid you can also move the stripper guide a bit closer to the reel. Tape the guides up and test the layout. Good luck.

Smith optics with chromo pop lenses or igniter lenses. Not cheap but great in all light conditions and for sight fishing.

Matthew, my bad. I clicked on the highlighted suppliers you posted. I see you gave me some options....including a musky blank. Much appreciated.

Matthew thanks for the reply. I have accounts with several suppliers so I've looked at several options. My hope is someone has built a similar rod and can point me towards a specific blank. I'm leaning towards a musky blanks.

Looking to build a spin rod to cast surface plugs from a boat for striped bass. Lure weigh 2-4oz blank length 7'6"-8'. I have some ideas but I'd like to get some input from the group. Thanks in advance

I use them for fly rod grips, and I always coat carbon fiber with epoxy. It makes a big difference. The grip becomes sticky with wet hands. Plus you can put your rod label on the grip. I haven't tried permagloss on the grips yet but I'm sure it work. Permagloss is a great product.

A friend received a rod as gift from a client with those guides a couple years ago. The rod was purchased in Japan while on a fishing/business trip. It's a 10' light surf rod and pretty sweet. The first thing I said was "hope you can get replacement guides". They are impressive but look easy to break. I started a thread asking for info about purchasing on this site, with no luck. I als

After reading responses I realize I left out that my guide recommendation is for a saltwater bottom fishing or jigging rod, I'm not casting. I use the 10's to allow line to leader knots to pass easily. You need to take line a leader connections into consideration. If that's not an issue you can use 8's as runners.

You are on the right track. You have a lot of good info. I start with a 20 and go to 10's to the tip. Lots of ways to do a spiral so take in all the info builders give you and do what makes the most sense to you. Always static test before wrapping. Good luck

Just a thought Mel. What about the guide placement? Is the guide placement(spacing) different from your rods? Maybe the location of guides in relation to the ferrule is putting an additional load on ferrule causing it to fail. My $.02.
