I read somewhere (on here I believe) that the smaller bottles of Permagloss can be fitted with the metal lids from Testor’s model paint. I just use a self tapping screw in that lid and drip enough into a cup (without completely removing the screw) for the project and then screw the lid back on. Same concept as the can. I store it upside down as well. Keeps for over a year. It has failed before, b

Also some other traditional “dry fly” blanks to consider (if that is what your end goal is) would be the Thomas and Thomas Paradigm, Winston Pure and the Sage Trout LL. Some of these can be hard to get ahold of and, depending on your budget, might be price restrictive.

I’ll agree with Herb about the Vintage 7’6” 4wt. That “Vintage series” of CTS is a fantastic moderate action blank. It is not advertised on the website, but Herb can get you the hookup on that. (Side note: I would buy CTS through him over anyone here in the states.) I have built all the way down to a “0wt” in that series and they are a true moderate action. The only other possibility that I can t

Don, I don't know what is going on, but I will say that the receipt of the blanks has been super slow. I ordered one the first week of May and finally got it last week. It could be the whole virus thing, could be striking workers at the receiving docks, could be how backed up the delivery systems have been... I don't know. But now that I have this blank, I wish that I had ordered 3 of them. I got

Fernando, it was great to have met you at the show and talk about all sorts of things at the hotel lobby bar. Looking forward to seeing you again and wish you health and have fun building over the next year!

Raymond, without having seen the rod I would say you are right on track contacting Mike or James. A couple of others that you might consider would be the Japanese makers of Ijuin-Rod and Kabuto Rods. Search the Fiberglass flyrodders forum and you might (just might) come across the exact rod or maybe someone with an old Lami blank. Chris Barclay’s rods would be another to consider but he almost ne

Mick, I used a sapphire blue Madeira thread and it blended perfectly with the blank. I then trimmed it in silver. Great looking blanks and the rod looked pretty snazzy if I say so myself. Lol

My best advice is to go to a local fly shop (if you have one) and talk to the guys there and cast a couple different lines. Chances are you'll probably end up with a line that is at least a 1/2 weight heavy maybe even a full line weight heavier than it is rated i.e. A "heavy" 6wt line or a 7wt line. I prefer weight forward lines for my graphite rods, some like double taper so they can f

I am approaching 42, been building for about 5 years. And I do have little ones (almost 2, 5 & 7). But I can see how they could put a damper on building. Been blessed to build the older 2 a couple of rods already and hope to keep doing so for years. Hopefully they will pick up the craft when they get just a little older (but they already have a passion for fishing.)

They can be a lot of fun. I like to build them for Ultralight applications. A couple that stand out as spinning rods are the Rainshadow RX-6 662-4 it's actually a very durable ultralight. I almost cried when my customer told me he "made a circle" out of the rod on a 15 pound carp. The lightest Ultralight that I have built is a 7'6" CTS vintage series fly blank in a 0wt. The guy tar

Thank you Tom, I will probably build or have some stands made as well as a thread carriage. I do like the Alps chuck a bunch, but for right now I have the PacBay upgraded chuck. I try not to look a gift horse in the mouth, ha ha. Eventually I will buy a Custom Power wrapper or a Renzetti, but beggars can't be choosers and I'll work with what I have for now. Appreciate the input greatly, sir!

Spencer, I had wondered exactly that about the beds. Appreciate it. I think that the PacBay and AmTack are the exact same parts (at least the upgraded chuck, tail stock, tool rest). At least the AmTack stuff in the catalog looks identical to the PacBay stuff I have with different labels. The Alps chuck and newer tail stock are quite different and seem to have a height adjustment. Thanks again for

Robert, I used to work part time at a scrapyard and would take the turntable motors out of microwaves...Most are in that 3-7rpm range, but I have pulled a couple that were 36rpm. Most are also 120vAC, but there were a couple that were stepped down to a smaller voltage (those got REALLY HOT when you hook them up to 120v laughing at myself) I don't know if I would use it for a drum style dryer, but

Thanks Gary, I think you are correct. PacBay and AmTack look identical. I guess I should've asked about the Alps bed in particular...so much cheaper than the PacBay or AmTack bed. Wondering if it'll work (even with some slight modification.)

Hey all, I was wondering who could tell me if the Alps/PacBay/AmTack parts are interchangeable? I did some horse trading and acquired a new PacBay upgraded chuck, tailstock and tool rest. My dilemma is this, I don't have a wrapper bed for these tools as of yet. Will the Alps bed work with the PacBay parts? Or is there a possibility of using a larger aluminum "T-track" or channel and j

Don, that is awful. I have since built a revelation for myself, but ended up selling it to a friend before I got a chance to fish it. He loves it and I'm looking for another when I get a chance to do some more personal work in the shop. Lol

Phil, I imagine that for salt water rods that you are building, you would be correct. The bigger diameter of the tips on salt water fly blanks would lessen (I think) the importance of a concave foot. I wasn't trying to call right or wrong, trying to figure it out for myself and to get your take on it. And thanks for the idea of doing a locking wrap on the recoil snakes. Fantastic idea that I wish
