That's the great thing about building your own stuff. Build it to fit your comfort level. If you put the rod butt on your waist to fight the fish you can get away with a shorter butt. If you like it under your arm a longer butt may be more to your liking. For jigging I go under the arm with a longer butt, and for bottom fishing I put the butt on my waist with a shorter butt and longer fore grip.

I've been building a few salt water blanks for bottom fishing, mostly snapper and grouper. So far have been using a 40-60lb class rod. My question is, which is more important, the line rating of the blank or the max drag rating of the reel I'm using?
I'm thinking of going down in rod size to a 20-40lb class rod " just to get a lighter rod" but keeping my 50lb line for abrasion resist

It seems a size 11 or 11/64 roller tip is hard to find. Can I use masking tape to build up to size 12 ? or better to sand tip to fit size 10 ? Is the hi temp glue the desired medium for roller tips or something different? Thanks. Joe

Most of the time they will be used in a rod holder. The kids are not big enough to hold the rods and usually have both hands on the reel crank, so the fore grip shouldn't be an issue but I did order the short fore grip. I guess my main two questions are, will the short curved butt be too short when using the rod in the rod holder and for the tuna application do I need to do an all roller rod or c

Wanting to build a bent butt rod for multi use. Light tuna "black fin" . Trolling for kings or whatever we can get. but also for bottom fishing for snapper and grouper with kids. The rods will be in a holder when trolling and bottom fishing with the kids. My question is short or regular butt, and when to go roller versus regular guides. The blanks are power tip PTSW54XXH 80# class rods

Thanks Mark, that's what I was interested in doing was getting the line around and under as early as possible without causing other issues. This rod will be a learning experience.

11. spiral wrap
Attempting my first spiral wrap. My question is, do I place the stripper guide at the usual distance from the reel and start the spiral from there or move the stripper closer to the reel to start the spiral earlier?
The Blank will be used for bottom fishing for snapper and grouper. Thanks, Joe

12. Re: static test
I struggle with the static test also. How much is too much load? Stop at 90 deg. or less? Line touching blank while at 90 deg? Just some of my hang ups. I always end up with too many guides. Hope to make the next expo and would like to see this presentation.

14. crank bait blank
Need some blank suggestions for a couple of crank bait builds.
First, a small cranking rod for square bills and shallow baits such as KVD 1.5's and 200 series Bandits. Open to all brands, but want to keep this blank under 100$. 7' to 7'6" one piece.
Second, A medium cranking rod such as KVD 5 & 6xd, Bandit ledge series. Open to all brands but would like a more premium blank. Budget

19. Icrbe
2015 will be my first time to the event. Flying in from Mobile Al. Whats the easiest way to do it ? Fly to Charlotte and rent a car then drive to Winston? Should I try to fly closer? Also going to try to stay close to the event for the weekend.
No flights close to me that will fly into Winston-Salem, so close with a connection flight looks as best I can do.
Any travel tips/suggestions woul
