When fishing from a kayak, rod length has never really been a problem for me, but HANDLE length has. In a kayak you need a little shorter handle on your rod to keep the handle from hitting you in the stomach and taking away mobility. I am also a spoon plugger and also use much shorter and stiffer trolling rods. The short stiff rods work well for me. The writings of Buck Perry and Don Dickson are very informative. I also have never used a trolling rod anything like what is being described so have no advice there.

Something I haven't seen mentioned in the thread. When I started to fish out of kayaks, long handle rods stuck me in the gut. Sitting in a kayak, a 7" to 9" handle works well. It all depends on how the rod is to be used.

Small guide size does nothing to eliminate torque when they are placed on the top of the rod. Even though the guides are smaller, they still want to move to the bottom of the rod. That problem is only eliminated by placing the guides (small or large) on the bottom or under side of the rod. Torque increases with load (fish size). If a 5 pound fish is large for you, then torque is minimal. If

For the majority of my fishing I use 30 lb test braid joined to a 5 to 7 foot fluorocarbon leader with a Crazy Alberto Knot. Conserves the braid, fluoro breaks first, very small knot that goes through even micro guides quite well. Definitely a smaller knot than the uni to uni.
