Hi Spencer
Thanks for the info. A lot to take in. We are there the first week of July just after ice out. Trolling big spoons and and flat fish. No wire line. In fact the fish are looking for shallow warm water at that time of year. We will even sight fish for them casting in some of the bays. I think I am going to build a 7.5' Musky Rod. Fast action?

Hi All,
It's been a long time since I was on this forum. Funny how much time a couple of kids can take up! Really happy to see the conversations are still going strong!
I am taking my father-in-law on a fishing trip to Great Bear Lake in July. I wanted to build us a rod each for this trip. It would be used for trolling for very big Lake Trout (30-50lbs). I have no idea what type of Rod is

Hi Roger
What is the max time you would use your "one +" technique on a drying rod? I see thin spots all the time but I never touch th m because I always thought it was best to let it set then apply another coat?
I like your method though.

Hi Kevin
Thanks for the reply. Couple things.
Are the wraps on your rods white?
Are they covered with Threadmaster?
Your grips what material are they made from? Sounds like foam to me?
I know the blank won't go white. It's not finished with epoxy. I am concerned that the epoxy will yellow.
Thanks for your input.
John thanks for the pics! I will do a couple tests wraps. I am

When I make an E-Glass Grip I am always colouring it based on the theme for the rod. I don't like the look of a rubber butt cap so I use the excess tinted epoxy that I use to colour the grip, and pour a bit into these art paint holders. I then epoxy them to the bottom of the butt to finish it off. Makes for a nice clean butt cap. And you don't have to use the same colour so it allows you to be cr

Hi Roger
Do yo happen to have a picture of what the wraps looked like? I assume they were not smooth like when you use epoxy? But then again they won't yellow? I am still thinking about what to do for my white E-glass grip I am doing.

Tom that is true but they will get dirty real quick. Besides I really like the look of the white grips from Riely's website.

Hi Roger,
The rod is actually a burnt red colour. I am doing white grips and white wraps. My buddy who I am making this for might get out fishing 3-4 times a year. So the rod won't see to much action. I figure if it can look good for a coupe years thats good enough. He will break by then! lol
I am more concerned about the grips really turning yellow. But I am going to tint the epoxy white so

Sounds like I will have to put up with yellowing over time then. Hopefully tinting the epoxy white will help with this a bit.

Hi All,
In my previous post I mentioned I was building a white rear grip for spinning rod. I am using a E-Glass Sleeve over foam core. I am going to tint the epoxy white to get a white grip. Question
If you tint the expoxy white will it prevent it from yellowing?
Has anyone done this? Experience?
If you use Perma Gloss as a final coat does this prevent the epoxy under from yellowing?

16. White Thread
Hi All,
Hope everyone had a great weekend!
I purchased an MHX blank recently to build a spinning rod. I picked one of the colour blanks - Metallic Red. The colour of the blank is much darker than I anticipated. More like a Burnt Red. It's hard to match a thread to in. I do think the white thread I have looks pretty good on it. It has a bit of a silver touch to it. I tried a test wrap a

Hi Don,
I am only a hobby builder so l just got distracted with my kids and life! I have 4 rods I am about to start so I am back again for now. I have to build 2 casting and 2 spinning rods. 3 of them are for friends and 1 for me!
I am sure I will have questions as its been a while since my last build.
BTW I f you recall you helped me with my first ever build about 4 years ago now. The

Where can I buy materials to build my own carbon grips? is it still Riely Rods? I have been off the site for about a year now so I am not up to speed with all the sponsors.
Thanks for the help!

Hi Bill,
Are you using the clear epoxy or the urethane as a finish? I am going to order this today. I have not been fully satisfied with all the epoxies I have tried so far on white blanks.

I am going to wait a couple days and then coat with epoxy.

Hi Tom
I assumed anything after 1 hour would be fine.
Should I wait 2-3 days then add a second coat to my larger decal? It still looks good but it only has one coat.
Can I apply epoxy over the Permagloss?

Hi Bill
Is there a easy way to get it off?
Can it be coated with epoxy? The rear logo is good because it only has one coat of Permagloss. The real problem is the small decal.
Thanks

Hi Roger,
The Decals are on the rod already. So no turning back now.
Hi Bill,
I did seal the decals with the Testors decal sealer and used CP.
Can I put epoxy over everything? If yes I will wait a couple days and apply epoxy.
BTW the rod is a gift to a friend. I don't sell rods I build for a hobby.

Hi All,
Well I took a chance and decided to try Permagloss over water slide decals I made. I am very disappointed so far. I am hoping I can still save this build.
My procedure was as follows
Decal 1 small 3/4" x 1"
1. Sealed decal with Testors sealer.
2. Applied the small decal and waited 2 hours
3. Applied colour preserver waited 4 hours
4. Applied Permagloss and every

Hi All,
I am going to print some labels on my ink jet printer. I have 2 questions.
1. What program are you using to create the artwork? Preferably a inexpensive one.
2. i plan to print a label to cove the entire butt section of a split grip. Can you point me to a how to tutorial to make it appear seamless?

Hi All,
I want to put a water slide decal over the butt section of a white rod I am currently building. I am going to print the decal on white Testors water slide decal paper. I want to use Permagloss because I want it to stay clear and yellow like epoxy. I will treat the decal with a sealant before I apply it.
Will there be an issue with the PG lifting the decal?
Do I need to coat it wit
