This is very interesting. Im an occasional rod builder. I build a few rods every few years, its not something that I do every day. I find it mind boggling to go through all of the ads and posts to try and define what I need. You guys have been very helpful, and I do appreciate it. Thanks.

I am currently using a newer Fenwick 6' (?) ultra light spinning rod for my trout fishing. I use mostly 4lb test and I use 5x trout hunter leader for my tippet materials. When needed, I go to something even lighter. My biggest single issue with this rod is the rebounding wiggle when I cast a light jig or minnow. It just shakes too much, and it robs distance from my cast. I am sure that a

Well, perhaps someone here can recommend something. Experience means more to me than data. I have seen 8' 3wt blanks that were built as spinng rods, but not as a combination spin and fly rod.

Hello, Im looking to build a new rod for bait fishing (live 2" redfin minnows) for trout. I want an 8' or longer UL spinning rod, maybe build from a fast action 8' to 9' 3wt fly blank.. ? I want to utilize the new style guides for increased casting distance and accuracy. Recommendations please? Price range for blank, decent cork handle and good reel seat, and guides... $75 t

I have two vintage Fenwick fly rods, both are missing the butt caps. Does anyone have a decent drop in and epoxy in place replacement for these? I did a search but could not find any info. Thanks. Jesse

I was wondering if anyone has built a 10' combo rod for spin fishing and for fly fishing with nymphs. Im considering a fast action 3wt. blank and then set it up with the Microwave or similar guide system. Is this feasible in this rod length and this style of line guides? If not, what would you recommend? I fish live minnow in early spring and late fall, the rest of the season I fly fish.

The folks at Scott got right back to me. They suggested a wiping rag with toulene or acetone. I have found that I can scrape the epoxy with a PENNEY. It is softer than steel, harder than plastic, and its not gouging my blank.... This is a slow process, no matter how you do it.

Hello all, Its been awhile since I have done some rod work, but Im about to get back into an old project. I have a Scott 8 1/2' 5 wt. G series rod that is really hammered. The problem that I am having is removing the left over epoxy on the guides that were on the blank. It is very difficult to remove and is chipping the original finish off of the rod. I would like to retain the original

River or pond, build an 8 weight 9 foot fast action rod. Use bug taper line. It will throw a Clouser Minnow in the wind, along with poppers and what ever hairy thing you can find. It may seem a bit brutish, but, you will have power in the wind and control. Don't go smaller than an 8 wt. Just my .02!

I was wondering how well the microwave guide system would work on ultra light fiberglass trout spinning rods, something like 5.5-7' long? Does the system work ok with softer rods like this, or, am I better off to go with standard ultra light type guides? Thanks. Jesse

Thanks to all. I will try to use the thread finish on this, it makes sense to me. The rod is in very nice shape otherwise, I don't want to mess it up. I like the old Fennies and want to keep it original. These old Fenwick graphite rods have a nice slow action. I like to use them myself, less break offs and the timing of the cast forces me to slow down and think a little before I react. Im

No, this is a 1 piece cork grip on a 6' 4wt fly rod. I want to preserve the grip. It basically broke about 3 inches from the hosel toward the reel seat section. (This handle is cork all the way to the butt). The break is clean, the broken part turns freely on the rod blank. The bottom section below the break is fine. I want to repair this and keep it original looking. I would like to p

I need help repairing this rod. It looks to me like it wasnt glued well by Fenwick back in the day, this is an early graphite GFF series rod. The upper section is broken and is not glued to the blank. Sooo.......... how can I get epoxy or a good bonding glue into the loose section and make a decent repair? Do I have to boil the bottom section, repair the part, then replace the entire h

Well, Cabelas had a 7' graphite Eagle, feels great, looks fine, so it went home with me. I need the rod today. I am still going to build one during the winter for next year. Im thinking hi modulus, fast action 3 or 4 wt 7.5' 2 pc. rod.... thanks to all who gave me some info. I will let you know if I like the Fenwick... it actually felt better in hand than did the St. Croix. Jesse

Do you think that an 8' fast action fly rod would be sensitive enough for what I am looking for? If so, what would you recommend?

I will go over budget to get it right, I like cork grips, prefer a full length but would consider the "poodle tail" style if you guys think its better. I am looking to build a specific rod to meet my needs. I fish with a group of guys and it gets very competitive, I want an edge. I have been using a cheap 6 1/2' rod, doing ok, but I am sure I am missing strikes because its too s

Hello all, I am looking to build a "sensitive" 7' to 8' spinning rod for trout fishing in Pennsylvania. I want to use 2-4# line, live minnows and small spinners. I often cast underhand to get under tree cover, etc. I want to do a budget build, keep the cost under $75.00. I want to feel the minnow and split shot bouncing along. What blanks fit the bill? Also, what line

I totally stripped the rod, some of the threads and underlying epoxy were extremely hard to remove. The rod has been used hard, it has some wear, so, I want to refinish the blank. The rod needs to be refinished completely, it is now just a blank. A beat up blank. Soooo...... rod finish (I dont have a fast turner to apply this and keep the rod moving) or, do I just use spar varnish? I

Hello all. I have aquired a new project rod, its a Scot G series rod, a G 85-5. Its my understanding that this is an old graphite rod and is of moderate action (which I prefer). This factory built rod has the toughest epoxy resin on the windings that I have yet to deal with, its super hard and very tough to remove. I am hoping to save the original Scott script on the rod, even though it is

I use old cut down rod sections, coat them with super glue, then sprinkle sand on them. Sand. When it looks like I have enough, I spray it with a "kicker" to cure the glue. Works great. Make a bunch, different sizes. I buy cheap glue at Walmart. Nothing fancy.

Hello all, About 15 years ago I took a rod building class at E. Hilles in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. At the time, we were building what was considered to be somewhat fast trout fly rods. Our instructor was sold on using over sized guides on the rods and typically adding one more line guide than normal. If a build called for 8 guides and a tip, we were using 9. (II think that the guides w

Hello all, I have been struggling to do some rod lettering and numbering with a pen. I dont want to use stickers, decals, or transfers. I want to use ink, then coat it with spar varnish. Glass and graphite rods. Can anyone provide some good info on what nibs they have been happy with? Inks? Maybe a link? You tube has a fair amount of info, but nothing really on writing on a blank.

I have been pleased with the Helmsan Spar Varnish, I love the depth and translucence of the windings when I use it because if offers a look that epoxy just doesnt do for me. I am strictly an amateur at this, I have only built maybe 6 or 7 rods over the last few years. I have been striving to make them nicer, and my efforts are starting to show. Im not at the level where I would like to be, but
