I used to have that problem too. It was resolved when I stopped using brushes to stir/apply the finish. Apparently there's a lot of air trapped in the bristles of the brush and when you use it to stir the finish it gets transferred there. Now I use a spatula and bubbles are gone.

Hi guys. Been a longtime reader here although I don't post much. I'm a casual builder and have done 20+ rods for myself. Need some advice.
I found an old broken factory spinning rod that has a beautifully done handle and reelseat. I have an idea to preserve this handle by cutting it off just in front of the foregrip and inserting a new blank (with a diameter slightly smaller than the original)al

Can anyone point me to an actual picture comparison of the Slim SiC vs the regular SiC.
Also, is there a specific designation in the model numbers to show that it has the slim rings?
Cheers

Tried to place an order but your website is unable to calculate shipping to Singapore. It says to "contact us" if I need help but I can't find any contact info on the website.

Hi Joe.
Thanks for the input. The combination of moderate action and stiff tip in the Falcon Originals is exactly what I'm looking for. It seems to suit my style perfectly :)
I agree totally about Falcon's assembly and choice of components. I have rebuilt two of these FS 4-17 rods - one was a total stripdown and the other had just the guides replaced. In both cases I used a 27x guide trai

Hi guys. I don't post here very often but I've been lurking and reading every night :)
Need some help. I'm looking for a blank thats similar or identical to a Falcon Original graphite spinning rod.
Model : FS-4-17
Medium action
8-17lb test
1/4 1/2 oz
Is there anything out there that's close? Or does anyone know where I can get the Falcon blanks - who makes them?
Thanks in advance for

I had the same problems once with Flexcoat High Build. It got really hot and hardened even as I was stirring it! After 2 mins, the mixing stick was totally stuck to the cup. Very strange. I threw that cup away and mixed another batch from the same bottles and it was fine. Can't explain it.

Hi guys. I've been reading about Fuji's Rapid Choke concept with interest and would like to try it out. However I don't have any K guides on hand. Has anyone tried this concept with regular Y guides? Specifically I'm thinking of doing a 6'6" light spin rod with the following guides :-
YSG 25----->
YSG 12-----> for a shortened reduction guide train but positioned so the outer edge o

+1 on what Raymond said. Quietly check out a current rod your friend's dad is using (and likes) and if possible, measure the distance from the reel stem to the butt end. Then simply ensure that the rod you're building places the stem the exact same distance from the butt. After that, it up to you how you wanna split the rear grip ie. the length of each piece of the split and the space in between.

Hi Tom. Thanks for the quick reply. In your opinion, what is the most critical component of the NGC or 27x (or even the Rapid Choke) system? Is it the position of the choke guide, or its size or the butt and transition guides or something else.

Just out of curiosity, say two identical blanks are built -one with NGC (or 27x) and the other using the old school of guide placement. Would there be a visible difference in the casting distances achieved? For clarity sake, let's assume twin 6'6" blanks tossing lures of 1/2oz max using the same reel/line/leader setup. I know NGC and 27x will transalate into a lighter rod and a more responsi

Just a heads-up if you own or intend to use a Daiwa SS700 reel. This old model reel that is still in current production has an extra SHORT foot. Some of the Fuji VSS and IPS seat don't screw down enough to hold it securely. Cheers!

I do a fair bit of my lure fishing from the bank of a lake/impoundment that's maybe 250 yds across so casting distance is critical. That said, I would hazard a guess that 60% of the bites come when the lure is more than halfway back from a 60yd cast!
Back to the question of rods built for accuracy vs distance - On all rods I've handled whether they be factory built or customs, I've NEVER cast a

16. Re: Guide Tunnel
On checking some personal rods that I've built in the past, I noticed some had guide tunnels that were not completely filled with finish. Is there any other material that I can easily drip into these tunnels to fill them up now? I'm not keen on mixing up a batch of finish just to fill a couple of tunnels. Also I find that epoxy finish is sometimes too viscous to flow into these tiny holes - I nee

I'm assembling my rod and find that I've run out of epoxy glue which is what I usually use. In a pinch, will slow cure araldite do? Are they the same thing?
Another thing. I'm still using masking to create arbors basically because nothing else is available locally. Do you guys that still do this use more tape or more glue under the Reelseat? I'm torn between 2 bands of tape and more glue vers

Hi David. Yeah I've read and re-read that article. Spool diameter is 38mm about 80% of the time but I might use a bigger reel occasionally. I'm going with #7 running guides to accommodate bulky wind-on leader knots. Guess I'm just gonna have to not be lazy and bind the guides and test cast :)

Hi guys. Just curious about the greatest step down in sizes that you've tried that still casts well. Me being not very adventurous, I usually go from #25 to #16 then #12 on rods with 3 reduction guides. Now I'm considering going straight from #25 to #12 and from there down to #7 running guides. Still not quite used to how it looks but since this is a personal rod, I'm up for some experimentation

I'm in the process of re-building a 6'6" med-light spin rod that originally came with a full rear grip. Now I'm worried that a split grip will be too light to balance the rod in a slight tip up position. Anyone got any recommendations/ideas?
Forum: rodboard 12 years ago
Linus Tay
@ Tom and Bill -Yes just shortening the existing rear grip would make it tip heavy and difficult to cast two handed. If I were to go this route, I'd only remove 2-3 inches.
@Joe -the rod is from the Original series. It's definitely not cutting edge technology but I like the curve and how it feels. I've already stripped the guides and I see what you're saying about the problems of stripping to

Tom, I was thinking of re-doing the whole rod but if the action was changed too much then I'd be inclined to just keep the existing handle assembly and maybe trim 3in off the rear grip for an overall rod length of 6'9" -not my ideal length but still shorter than the original.

I have an old Falcon spinning rod that I'd like to rebuild. It's a 7 footer medium spin which I find a little long and a tad heavy weight wise. I was thinking of trimming 6 inches off the butt end to shorten and lighten it. Is this a good idea? What will I stand to lose beside those 6in and some weight? Will the action of the rod change dramatically? Tks!

Thanks for the many insightful responses. Certainly a lot of useful information there. My experience seems to reflect the "not-too-many" camp too. I had a seven footer fast action 6-15lb on which I put 3 reduction guides and 6 running guides plus a tip for a total of 9+1. The stripper ended up about 19in from the spool face which was at the lower end of what is usually acceptable. I fou

Hi everyone. I've been reading up on the 27x system and experimenting a little on llight 6-7ft spin rods. The intention is to build a rod that achieves max casting distance AND fishes well. So do more guides on a rod equal greater line friction and thus cuts down on casting distance? Cheers!

28. Re: Spine
One issue that I've had may or may not be related to the "spine" question. Perhaps you guys can help me out here. After reading on this forum to build on the straightest axis, that's what I've been doing but my experience is that with 2 piece spin rods that are 6-7 feet long, this results in the top section twisting out of alignment after 30 minutes of casting with 3/4oz lures. I've che
