Hi
I am new to rod building I just did my first rod. I used an old rod and rewrapped it , The problem I had was after I put the epoxy on the yellow thread almost disappeared and went down to the color of the rod I did the underwrap in yellow and the overwrap with black thread. I did not use color preserve was this the problem? Thanks for any help you can give me. Nick

Nick
You have learned a valuable lesson very early in your rod building ventures--to wit, when not using color preservatives, the thread will tend to take the color of its background when the epoxy is applied. Put a red thread on a white rod, and the thread will turn a pale pink. Put the same thread on a black rod and the thread will turn darker red. Color preserver prevents this from happening and preserves the original color of the thread regardless of the background. Another way to preserve the thread color, is to color your background white. Now all threads will remain true.

Some people paint the blank with white latex ceiling paint. I use acrylic paint from the local craft store. Determine the placement and length of the wrap to be painted; wrap a couple of turns of masking tape at each end. Put a thin coat of paint on the blank and let it dry. Put a second thin coat on and remove the tape. Put a coat of color preserver over the paint before you wrap. As Ralph pointed out it is necessary to do this with any light colored thread. With one exception (Pearl) it is not necessary to do this if you are using metallics for underwraps.
Email me if you want to discuss this further.

Hugh,
You mentioned that no CP is needed when using metalics as an underwrap.

Would this hold true for white metalic? Is there white metalic?

Thanks
