i put a finish on a rod about a week ago .. after about 5 days it seemed like the finish on the butt wrap had shrunk .. now i can feel the threads i some places should i lightly sand it &apply another coat.. if so should i use grey scotchbrite or a very fine grit of sandpaper & what should i clean it with after sanding? the guide wraps came out fine thanks r flynn

As it cures it does tend to "pull down" a bit. If you feel you need another coat and the rod has not been handled, just lightly scuff with the grey scotchbrite and recoat. Don't use sandpaper - it's not necessary.

scuffing the finish is VERRY important if it has completely cured. If you don't, you'll get "fisheyes", lumps, voids and other unmentionables in the re-coat. Remember to work clean! Make sure you don't get fingerprints on the finish - - if you do you can clean with denatured alcohol or acetone before scuffing.

You may not even need to sand or scuff the finish. If it is fresh and new, I might give it a light cleansing with alcohol and wipe with lint free kim wipes and apply the second coat. It's worked out for me okay, but if you feel it necessary don't sand, but use the scotchbrite pad. I think it may depend on which brand and formula of finish was used as to whether scuffing is so important. But good advice, nonetheless. Easy enough to do, but again keep it clean to get the desired surfacing.

Just curious, which finish did you use? and whether hi or light build formula?
