Ferrule overlap

I recently purchased a factory second rod blank that seems to have an excessive amount of overlap at the ferrule connection. The male or butt section penetrates approx. 2 3/4". This is much more than any other rod I own. My first thought was to lightly coat the male end with slow cure epoxy to build up that portion. Has anyone encountered this problem and have a different solution or has tried the epoxy build up? any help would be appreciated. Bill Re: Ferrule overlap

That doesn't seem excessive to me . If it fits tight, don't fix it cause it ain't broke. Lynn Re: Ferrule overlap

Depending upon the diameter it may be excessive. You did not say if we're talking about a large saltwater surf blank or a 3 weight fly rod blank. In the former it would not be excessive, in the later it would be. But you have to be careful when trying to refit ferrules. They need to fit carefully along all the overlapping surfaces. If they do, then you would be better off not messing with it. Apply Permagloss can be the right thing to do when trying to restore a sloppy fit, but in your case it may only cause a poor fit which would be worse than what you have now. If the ferrule fits snugly without any hint of "click" when you bend or cast the rod, I'd leave it alone. If it clicks or comes apart when casting, then trimming from either the male or female end (depending upon the particular problem) may be in order. ............................
