Blem or 2nd question

I have spoken to some of the various dealers and know what they say but I'd like to have one of the blank manufacturers answer this question. When we see blanks listed as "blems" or "seconds" what are we really talking about? Does this mean the blank in question is not up to par from a cosmetic standpoint or could it mean that there could be a structural problem? Why do some blanks get culled? Is there any way to really now what we are buying in this respect?

Rod Blanks are inspected, or should be, to cull out the parts that do not meet the manufacturers quality and specification standards. Cosmetic blems could be rejected for two tone tint, or other color variations. Others are rejected for being cork screwed, have ferrule knock, or just plain too crooked. They may also be rejected for being over sanded, trimmed too short, or do not flex out properly, according to the desired specifications, etc..

When seconds or blems are purchased, there is really no way to quarantee what you are getting.

The only way to assure the quality of the product line that you are purchasing is to use first run, blank quality, branded rod blanks.
We are very fortunate with having most of the manufacturers in this country that appreciate the custom rod building facet of the industry. They will inspect and seperate the best blank quality, for branded blank sales. The production blank quality, for their finished rod production, and the balance is known as blems or seconds, that are liquidated to recoup some of the material costs.

You will usually find the manufacturers that support the custom rod builders, do supply consistency in their branded rod blank product line. I would suggest sticking with the manufacturers that support you with consistent quality products, as well as timely delivery. The custom rod builders do have access to some excellent vendors.
