Forgot to ask Bob this question this morning so I'll throw it out to the board. For flyrods, which side of the spine is best to build on? Is there a firm philosophy on this or do opinions widely differ...or both? Fire away. Re: Spining Flyrods

I put my guides ON the spine. I feel this makes the rod track better during the forward cast. When fighting fish or lifting line, the guides hold the rod in position so no twist occurs. Others will differ I am sure. P.S.

I did recently build a larger and heavier line weight rod for fellow for whom casting is not very important. He is chumming fish into range and then flipping the fly out a short distance. He wanted the maximum power I could get out of the blank. I fooled with the blank and found that for this I could not put the guides on either the spine or opposite it. I had to mount them on the outside of the natural curve of the blank. The spine ended up about 150 degrees off this point. I had been reading about how this builds the most powerful type rod and it appears to have worked. The customer was estatic. I like how it feels but am not sure I would do this where casting is a prime consideration. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
