Brad

Is this for crappie fishing? A friend of mine wants me to build him a 10 foot spinning rod on a fly blank, for crappie. I have not started this yet, but I figured I would get the reel he was going to use from him and work out the angles. From that I will decide what ring sizes will work. The "line cone" will determine the first guide ring size, but I don't know how far the first guide will be from the reel yet.

If he is going to use this primarily as a spinning rod, then you will need to build it as such. Guide size will be determined by reel and line size. Generally, if you choose a ring diameter that is at least 1/2 the diameter of the reel spool, you'll be close for the first guide.

I would employ the New Guide Concept system (and possibly the New Concept Guides if they are appropriate in this instance) for any spinning rod.
