Rod Finish

I am putting on new guides for a friend's spinning rod. It is a black blank that has a fair number of chips (appears paint) off the finish. I would like to restore this color(I was thinking of using a black Sharpie but the amount of discolored scratches are a bit much) and put some type of glossy finsih back on it. Any suggestions?

It sounds like this rod needs some TLC. Is this a glass rod? Your prep work is the most important part of a rod refinish.. On glass rods you can sand with a wet/dry paper but finish off with a 400 then shoot it with a bomb paint. Use the paint for autos.. Do not sand on graphit rods. use scotch brighr gray.. You may find a local auto body shop to do your work for you a reasonable price that is what I do. Good luck Bob
