I see that I understand that I violated a cardinal rule of using my handle FlyDoctor from other flyfishing elists. Since my other post will be deleted here's this question again.

I just bought an Orvis Superfine 7'6" 1 wt blank and am in the midst of doing the wraps. In the little booklet that Orvis supplied they recommend double wrapping the rod tip and also the areas at each end of the female ferrule. I've never done this on any other rod and never seen it mentioned anywhere else for a freshwater flyrod. Anyone know why Orvis recommends this practice for such a lightweight rod? Is it for added strength? Thanks--FlyDoctor

I don't really understand the term "double wrapping" and wonder if they don't mean using an underwrap on the tip section guides.. Some companies ask that you do this as they cannot be certain what type of guide prep any particular rod builder may be doing. Should a sharp edged guide, or a foot that doesn't sit flat be wound tightly on many of the thin walled blanks, failure can be the result. Thus they ask for an underwrap just as a bit of insurance against the possibility of a poor prep job.

You do want to make a short , albeit snug wrap at the very edge of the female ferrule to prevent a split out. If you are working with a spigot ferrule, then you also will want to make a similar wrap at the edge where the plug is fitted into the butt section.

Nope, they are pretty specific about this. They only say to make the double wraps on the tip just below the tip and on each end of the female ferrule. They tell you to wrap the thread to the usual stopping point then reverse it back over itself to where youn began. They say nothing about double wrapping guide feet. This is not a spigot ferrule blank. I suspect though that your answer about a thin wall is it since this is a full flx and very light weight rod--FlyDoctor

That is an odd request for sure. But, I suppose if you want to keep any warranty intact you will have to follow their instructions.
