Any of you machinist out there make tapered mandrels for turning cork?

For turning cork I use regular drill rod like you would find at most machine shops. It doesn't have to tapered and I don't think you would want it to be. Costs about $2 or $3 per foot for the chrome plated type and most machinists will put you a 60 degree bore in one end to accept a live center for just a couple bucks more.

I use 5/16 smooth rod too; 1/4" threaded is too whippy. I glue up the rings on the same, then mount it in the lathe. Yes you want the end center-drilled, so a pointed tailstock center will catch it.

i use 5/16 smooth rod and put parrafin wak on it before glueing the rings, i dont counterbore the end i use the rod holder on my rod lathe.works for me
