Spine finder

I built the spine finder as described in the back issue of RodMaker. I can not make it work. I have new brgs 8" apart in pvc pipe. I have a 6'6" MH blank that I have spined by other methods and when I put it in the spine finder and apply pressure it does not roll anywhere. Roll blank -same thing no matter where you spin it and then apply pressure. Are my brgs too far apart? Any suggestions? Thanks, Dave Patterson

I would think your bearings might not be very free turning. Did you clean them thoroughly? You do not want any grease or heavy lubricants in there, only a very light oil at best. They are not too far apart.

Also remember that the spine is the outside of the curve when pressured into a bend of least resistance. When rolling by hand, this puts the outside of the curve on the bottom, and when using a spine finder and pressing down the outside of the curve will be on top.
