Is there some type of thread that can be wrapped onto a blank that when coated with either rod finish or cp it turns out 'clear' (clear enough so that subtle detail under it woun't be distorted)?

I was hoping that clear monofilament would work, but the tests didn't pan out. The finish didn't penetrate evenly and it came out all blotchy.

I also tried some of the new flourocarbon mono, thinking it's added clarity would help, but still had the penetration problem (maybe I'm wrapping/packing it too tightly?).

I did my 'tests' on glass rods (no 'hiding' the problems...) with mono material and flourocarbon in diameters of .004. Maybe this is too fine a material for the finish to penetrate? Would a 'thicker' fibre allow the finish to penetrate better?

I heard or read somewhere (here maybe?) that white thread without cp will go 'clear' but I'm worried that it will be just transparent (there is a difference, I think) and will distort whats under it.

Normally I'd just 'try it' and see, but I'm coming to realize what a great resource this site is. Might save some time and aggravation by asking the experts who have probably already solved this problem....

Are you trying to protect the detail under it?

Normally, just a coat or two of finish will do the job.

Finish cannot penetrate something like mono - it might seep into the spaces between each wind, but that's about it. Whenever you have blotches and the like, you are getting penetration/absorption in some areas and not in others.

White thread, particularly size A, will go transparent if finished with epoxy and no color preserver is used.
