Fuji makes two single foot alconite guides. The BUNAG has two wire frames connecting the alconite ring to the foot. The BLAG has the ring frame connected directly on the foot. Which style is best and for what reason? Does the BUNAG keep the fly line further away from the rod blank? Are the BUNAG guides used closest to the stripper guides with the BLAG guides used toward the tip? Is there a weight difference between the two? Which do you use and why? These guides will be assembled on a 9' 5 wt fly blank.

BLAG for me on that rod. I am not familiar with the other one you mentioned.

The BUNAG guide is a bridge guide between the stripper and the BLAG. By design it is a little stronger, but it won't matter on your rod. I would stick with just the BLAG. It looks cool though!

I've not built any fly rods but on Concept style casting rods I've dumped the 2 BUNAG's bridge guides 8 and 7 and use a doublefoot 8 and a single foot BLAG 7 instead. On many of the rods I built with the BUNAG bridge guides last year they came loose. The foot is just too short. Again I can't say how they would work on a fly rod but they just don't stand up laying on the deck of a bassboat. Especially spiral wrapped.

The principle behind the concept system is to keep the line as close to the rod blank as you can. This reduces the rod wanting to twist on you during casting. The goal is to take a large butt guide and then get the line down near the blank quickly and keep it there. The BUNAG is a link guide to transition from the larger BLNAG or BYAG guides down to the BLAG guides. Thats why they only come in 7 and 8 ring size. I love to use a BLNAG for a fly stripper guide and then get down to a BLAG close to the blank after going through a BUNAG. You must however use the proper guide spacing so the line perfectly follows the blank and not rub it. In other words no charts here, bend the blank and mark it. Might cost you an extra guide or two, but the extra cost, time and weight are negligble compared to the smooth action you manufacture. Bob McKamey educated me on this concept.
