I'm going to throw this out even though it is not quite what you had in mind. For the past few months I have been running some very nice labels or whatever you want to call them on my inkjet printer. It's an Epson 900 and I use the best quality coated paper and get a really, really nice label. It looks like something you would expect to have come from a professional label maker.

I put my rod company name on it, the customer's name if he wishes, and the model and date. It has my logo and everything is done to look very professional. I use 3M 777 super spray adhesive to glue it to the tube lid. Then I pour some epoxy rod finish on it. If you are careful here, the finish will spread out just to the edge and still retain some depth over the label. The end result is a label under 'glass'. Very classy and something you don't see everyday. I have to credit this tip to Tom who passed it on in an email. Since I tried it I don't think I'll use anything else again. It's just really very nice and something you could consider.

Be careful and experiment to see if your printer's ink is subject to smearing or running with your brand of epoxy. If it is you will have to spray the label with some type of clear artist's sealer or matte finish first.

Something I do on tubes is take the brass top to one of the engraver shops in the local mall and have the customer's monogram engraved in the top. Looks sharp and costs about $10.00.
