Hello Community, new to the site. My question is, I have heard/read about removing the "fuzzies" sticking out of cured epoxy by nicking them off w blade and re- applying another coat. what do you all think?

Thanks
G.Mendoza

That is exactly what I do.

I find that those nubs of cured epoxy that I slice off will stick to the wrap because of static charge. I use a piece of masking tape as a sort of tack cloth to remove these nubs before recoating otherwise they will make more nubs in the fresh coat.

Is the BiC lighter forgotten technology?

Chris, as long as you don't scorch your wrap.

Yes, cut off fuzzies, then apply at least one more coat of epoxy. As stated above, do not cut into the thread wrap!

Just curious. Why is it generally recommended to nick these imperfections off with a blade, rather than potentially level them with a fine grit sandpaper? Is there any reason NOT to use sandpaper?

Hello Ernie.

With a lot of threads if you use sandpaper, it will frizz & Fuzz, a sharp clean cut hides the thread better.

My 2cents.

Tight Wraps & Tighter Lines.

If you have thread nubs after finishing, the best way to get rid of them is to shave them off and then re-coat. In my opinion, the best way to fix thread nub problems is to prevent them from happening in the first place. To do this, don’t pull the tag end of thread out of the wrap with your tie-off loop. Instead, insert your tie-off loop early and when tying off pull the tie-off loop so the end of it is snug against the outside of the thread wrap with the thread tag sticking up. Then cut the thread tag as close as possible to the end of tie off-loop. Now when you pull the lie-off loop out, the tag end will be hidden under the wrap with no nub.

Hello Norman, just what the doc ordered! Look forward to a “ fuzziless” future in repair and building! Thank you to previous posters also… great feedback!

Very true...I have always used the blue part of the flame (Bic lighter) and always apply the heat to the top of the wrap...never underneath.
The tag end will shrivel up and you can then pick off that part with your finger nail once it hardens.

"Nip it in the bud" so to speak. I do Normans method, it works.. If I do get a fuzzy before I apply the finish I do the Bic lighter trick.

Have fun

John

Sorry. I actually didn't realize you guys were referring to nubs created by thread. I would never sand those either. Sometimes one gets a nasty little piece of dust or the like that happens to land on your work. I thought a quick scuff over these with some fine sandpaper would effectively annihilate them before another coat.

You can sand down imperfections or blobs in the epoxy and recoat and it will be smooth, but you can never sand into any thread or that wrap is toast.
