Mudhole wrapper magnet kit is awesome!

I’ve come close a bunch of times to ordering a power wrapper, but always did builds with the money instead. Between that C-Clamp I recently posted and the CRB wrapper I’ve owned for years, I got to use a Sully at a fly shop. That was so nice, and I just never have disliked turning the blank with my fingers. I fastidiously pack during the wrap so a power one doesn’t seem like that big of a deal to me. Anyway, I’ve had a mixed relationship with the CRB hand wrapper over the years. I’ve put the bearing wheels upgrade on it and still haven’t found the tension to either adjust or stay put well, especially in comparison to the Sully.
This evening I installed the neodymium magnet kit from Mudhole and… oh my, the tension adjusts nicely and smoothly stays in place! They have quite a markup over what these magnets without the holes go for at BezosMart, but the function is so great that I’m glad I tried these. Has anyone else tried them? I went to magnets on my thread carriage about 4 years ago. I got them from a place that was a board sponsor at the time. As you said, sooooo much better. Spool movement is smooth and tension stays where you put it. The only changes needed is to compensate for the increase in tension as the spool empties out. I also find that they are very responsive to even the slightest change. Very easy to dial in the tension you're looking for. If I remember correctly I paid about $10 a pair.
A minuscule cost, for the upgrade in performance over the old spring system. Re: Mudhole wrapper magnet kit is awesome!

I realize now that I just got used to fighting and compensating for thread tension issues. In comparison to that, good thread tension control from the wrapper is so much easier. Re: Mudhole wrapper magnet kit is awesome!

Just wondering if any of you know if the magnet kit will work with the Mudhole Core Hand Wrapper? I posted a question on the website and I never got a response. Re: Mudhole wrapper magnet kit is awesome!

Good Afternoon Ed,
So long as you are using "S" size or 100yd spools, they should work as a replacement for the spring that comes with the Core Hand Wrapper. Rob Frichette Mud Hole Custom Tackle Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 10/31/2024 05:18PM by Rob Frichette. Re: Mudhole wrapper magnet kit is awesome!

Ive not had the same luck with them. They are an improvement over the springs but still inconsistent. But hey, at least they aren't like the foot pedal.... Re: Mudhole wrapper magnet kit is awesome!

Have you guys thought about possibly making the spool bolt on the Core Hand Wrapper to accommodate the magnet kit and larger spools? Re: Mudhole wrapper magnet kit is awesome!

I replaced mine for just a few dollars with a stainless one just a little longer than the right length. It was moderately annoying to have to do this, but less so than re-spooling, again. Re: Mudhole wrapper magnet kit is awesome!

Ed,
Not sure if it's been discussed, I can forward your input to our products team. It was pretty simple to remove the bolt from one here in the office, might be easiest to just find something longer at the hardware store as suggested above. Rob Frichette Edited 1 time(s). I got a really nice burnisher delivered a few days ago from a non-sponsor of this forum that had about 1/32nd broken off its tip with a jagged edge. It was totally useless in its delivered form. After five minutes on a ceramic file it was really nice. Sometimes it’s just easier to fix and move one than to contest. There is only one brand in all of the rod building spectrum over my 35 plus years of building that I don’t see as being forthcoming, and I won’t divulge them as others haven’t seemed to have had the same experience. I ordered and installed the magnet kit on the CRB Core Hand Wrapper and it works great. I don't use any spools larger than 100 yds so it fit my needs without having to procure a longer spool bolt. The only downside is I have 4 magnets and I only needed two.
It's strange that Mudhole/CRB doesn't advertise the magnet kit works on the Core Hand Wrapper. Thanks for letting me know Rob F. Hopefully others can benefit from this information. Re: Mudhole wrapper magnet kit is awesome!

I tried to find a search selection on Mudhole site and when I couldn't I asked them why, because I wanted to look at their "Magnet kit" They responded they DIDN'T have a "Magnet Kit"! So I shrugged my shoulders and continued on my day, not looking any further. My .02. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
