I am finally changing out my rod building tables for "Dream Tables. My friend welded me 2 amazing steel tables 3' x 6' with a plate to bolt them together to make my 3'x12' final table(two stronger and easier to move).
He put MDO boards on top for now until I win lottery money to replace them with butcher block tops-lol. MDO is unfinished. Just going to clear coat without paint. What Clear coat would you woodworkers recommend ? Thanks so much, I have not made tables to finish so, have ZERO experience. Marcus McCleery Re: Wood Working question???

If you're going to eventually replace the MDO, I wouldn't spend the big $$$ on West Systems (or similar) epoxy for a clear coat. I would just get a good water-based polyurethane and hit it with a couple of coats of that. You can always do a light sand & recoat as needed, until you're ready to upgrade to your butcher block tops.
Speaking of those -- i have had pretty good luck finding nice quality table tops at very reasonable prices for my workbenches on Facebook Marketplace. Depends on what might be available in your area, but it might be worth a shot when you're ready to upgrade. Re: Wood Working question???

I have had good luck with the butcher block top I found at Ikea over the last 10 years. Re: Wood Working question???

All our kitchen counters and island is Ikea butcherblock. They're 20 years old, still hold dishes and look good. Re: Wood Working question???

There are real butcher block tops and lots of fake ones. End grain, hard maple is the real thing and incredible. Some edge grain, soft tropical woods are now labeled as “butcher block”. these are not in the same galaxy. I am just guessing IKEA is Baltic birch, which would be lesser than hard maple, but still a nice product. Re: Wood Working question???

I used 2, 6 foot butcher block Maple workbench tops, 3 coats of polyuretheane , they look great and are extreemely durable. Fishing is not a matter of life or death, it's much more important than that Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
