Re: Mixing larger amounts of rod finish.

I have been told frequently in the past that mixing less than 3cc of each part increases the margin for error. Today I read that mixing more than 3 cc each part increases the margin for error. Can't have it both ways!

The margin for error increases the more you mix. The margin for error decreases the less you mix.

In other words, if you're off 1 drop on a 2cc total mix, you're very likely to have a problem. If you're off 1 drop on a 6cc total mix, you're not likely to have a problem.

I think we're saying the same thing, only different! Lol I sometimes watch things take place with my won two eyes only to have someone tell me I was not seeing what I saw. Maybe it's just me.

Measure and mix carefully and at 3cc you will not have issues. Mixing larger batches is only going to create a bunch of unused epoxy.

I make mostly 9 ft fly rods, 4 pieces. I can mix 1.5 cc of each part for a total of 3cc of final product. I have never had a hardening/curing issue. But I am super careful when drawing epoxy into my syringes, make sure to avoid air bubbles in the syringe, and I measure the drawn amount exactly to the line. And always check twice!

You can also take any guesswork out of it buy using the premeasured mixing packets that Pac Bay offered. Lure Parts Online still has them. I have used them a couple times and they worked just fine. Squeeze out the contents, mix, and you are good to go.
