Runner guide sizing.

So I got the NFC ST 933 in that I ordered a few months ago. I had originally planned to use 12 lb braid to a 8lb leader for this set up for some light lure fishing off shore and jetty in so cal. The blank is slightly stiffer than expected and think fishing it closer to 12-15 lb would fit it better so will probably put on a C3000 Twinpower with 20ish? (2.0 PE) line and fish 12-15 leaders. One thing is that I have previously already ordered guides for the rod and I do like smaller guides with 8lb so went with size 4.5 runners and tip. Is this now too small for the 20 lb? The strippers seem fine as they are sized 20/12/ with choke at 5.5 I think but was thinking maybe 4.5 ring size slightly too small? If I had known I would have preferred a 5 or 5.5 size. I could buy new running guides and use 4.5’s on another blank later but don’t want to reorder the tip since I don’t foresee using a 4.5 size tip with 5.5 tube size in the near future.

4.5s are fine for that size line. Itd be fine for 25lb fluoro.

Use an FG or similar thin knot and you'll be great.

Fwiw, PE 2.0 is much closer to 40-50lb breaking strength.

Isn’t PE and Lb Test breaking strength different? I thought PE line was rated with maximum breaking strength while Lb test is the other way at minimum breaking strength. But thanks. I think I’ll commit to the 4.5’s then and do some test casting and such just in case.

PE is a diameter rating of polyethylene based lines. Its breaking strength can vary between strand counts, slightly different material formulations, and different weaving techniques. The 4.5’s will easily pass well tied knots in this range. I prefer Alberto’s over FG’s until the leaders get a little bigger in diameter. Some people may be better at tying small diameter FG’s than I am.

I've run 3 mm runners with 10 braid and 8 lb. leader just fine.
