Dear All,
You will start to see posts from the Facebook group trickle in - we are allowing them to trickle in slowly to make sure that nothing breaks. If you see anything strange, let us know please. Thank you, Aleks Re: Posts from Facebook Group

I am not a member of facebook, nor a fan of it. Here's my 3 cents worth; (1) been there, (2) done that and (3) never want to do it again. I guess we'll have to wait and see how it goes. Re: Posts from Facebook Group

Date: September 21, 2024 10:21PM There is a big overlap with the current forum members and the Custom Rod Building group that we acquired some time ago. It is heavily moderated and very craft focused. They will benefit from the knowledge in this group and vise versa. Here are a few snapshots from todays posts. I understand the hesitation, but I believe if moderated properly it will serve the community well. Re: Posts from Facebook Group

The Facebook group seems years behind the curve in terms of rod building expertise compared to this forum. Just my .02. Re: Posts from Facebook Group

If we never had to see any of the irrelevant off topic posts and the silly Tic Toc off subject junk, I would be all for it. If I wanted product reviews, Jeep vids, epic fails, etc. I would select those channels, and I don't know how you'd stop that nonsense here. Re: Posts from Facebook Group

Is there going to be any connection between the Facebook posts and this forum? It looks like it’s just screenshots being posted. If so, I don’t see any value. Not sure there’s any value even if there was some connection. Why not have a separate forum or just a singular topic for the Facebook posts? Otherwise it just looks like spam that pushes forum topics down.
I’m new to this forum but one of the biggest issues with it is that there are no pictures within posts. Re: Posts from Facebook Group

I no longer wish to participate in this forum. Would a
moderator be kind enough to delete me. Re: Posts from Facebook Group

Unless I’m missing something, I don’t see a problem. This site will run exactly as it always has. If you don’t want to participate in the Facebook group you don’t have to , and if you do you can. I deleted my Facebook account years ago because I disliked it. So, I don’t participate in any Facebook activities, and that’s my choice. Pictures can be posted on this site either directly to your post by using the Rodbuilding.org App, or indirectly via a link to your photo in Photos section of this site. The button to the Photos section is at the top of the page. You have to sign in independently to the photos section to use it, but it works.

One upside is for people who do not want to post their actual name. Just use the FB group with whatever handle you have for your page and that will get you around using your first and last name when it appears here. Re: Posts from Facebook Group

You will not see any off topic posts, or the ads that re-target you on FB -
We will create a separate category for FB posts (Its own topic/page) and you can click to view it at your leisure, or if you don't want to - don't Spencer Phipps Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > If we never had to see any of the irrelevant off > topic posts and the silly Tic Toc off subject > junk, I would be all for it. My opinion, Facebook is the root of all evil...
That said, what drives me away from a good number of topics on this forum is the pompous attitudes of some site veterans in response to novice builder's questions or techniques. Everyone has to learn sometime and, even though it may be under you or a repeat question, a good teacher is patient and answers those questions over and over. Heaven forbid a new hobbyist doesn't understand the atypical search box on this forum and asks a question that was previously answered 16 years ago. Shame on you snobs... The "snobs" here have been pretty mild compared to what you found on all the other rod building forums. I think thats why this place became #1. People knew they would not be flamed or ridiculed here like they were and still are on just about ever other rod building message board in history. Telling somebody to use the search function is a lot different than shaming them with ridicule which has been the norm on most forums and many of the FB rod building groups for years. Never was allowed here. Re: Posts from Facebook Group

Mike,
Flaming or being ridiculed is not allowed in the Facebook Group either - those posts get deleted, and the folks that post them get removed. There is an admin/moderator team of about 6 people that watch for that daily. Currently, the FB group has about 60K members, all of them are individually verified before being allowed to join. Thats up from 30K a year ago, and is the largest group in the world dedicated to our craft. Just like this is the largest forum - with communities that large, are there bound to be some bad apples? Sure, if you look at the group through, it is very supportive as a whole. What we currently see is that folks start their rod building journey through seeing posts on Facebook, Instagram, etc., and they do end up on the forum researching - Remember, first and foremost this forum is a database, the oldest resource on anything rod building related. You cannot search very well on FB - especially if you are trying to research, that is it's Achillies heel. "Rod building related posts / answers / questions don't just happen on this forum, just like innovation does not happen at only one company - and it is my firm belief that bringing that content together will benefit the community as a whole. This type of integration has not been done before, and it may not work out - we don't know. We have an idea on how it may work, but that is why we are starting slowly.
