Blank tip splintering

Splinter is my own fault. I was cutting 3.5” off the butt of my SJ-764 C6O2. Tip smacked against the cabinet. Only 1/8” section at the very tip showing some splinters. In my opinion, once I glue the tip top guide on, it will be stabilized/secure.
Opinion? Re: Blank tip splintering

I’m curious about this too. I had that happen to me while trying to glue the tip top on. It caught the tip and dragged one small splinter. I removed the splinter, glued, wrapped and epoxied the tip top on and assume it should be reinforced now. The splinter end was well within the tip top. Haven’t fished it yet though. Ouch. That @#$%&. You have nothing to lose by trying to put on a tip top. I would go with epoxy for bonding strength. I would try and get a tip top with a long tube length. It may work out OK. If not, and the action seems strange or the tip breaks off, you will have to buy a new blank tip section. So in trying you will lose nothing. Re: Blank tip splintering

The tip strength in that area is still very solid. It’s only a tiny portion on one side. Worst case, I could remove 1/8” of the tip. I don’t think I’ll have to. I might put a tiny amount of “super” glue on that splinter area, let dry, sand a little if needed, then install the tip top guide. Being it’s such a very short area. I don’t think it will be an issue or affect the performance. Got lucky I think. Re: Blank tip splintering

I’m sure it will be fine once I get it stabilized with the tip top on it. Re: Blank tip splintering

So in trying you will lose nothing. The tip top guide I have is a Fuji Titanium Torzite. I’ll either glue the splinter area or use 10 minute epoxy when installing the tip guide. Probably the 10 minute epoxy so it will “stabilize” the splinter area. I’m glad it isn’t deep or a long splinter section. It’s literally the last 1/8” on one side of the tip top. This will be my 15 year old son’s spinning rod for wacky rigs, weightless senkos, etc. It will replace his store bought combo. Only bass spinning rod in our line up. We don’t use spinning reels much for bass. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 09/20/2024 11:59AM by Jeremy Moore. Re: Blank tip splintering

I’m really not too concerned with mine either, just wanted to share to see what others thought, have done in the past, etc. Re: Blank tip splintering

I wouldn't mess with the tip; I would make absolutely sure that I didn't have any of the splinter hit or go outside the tip top tube while installing it, not the time to rush things. Re: Blank tip splintering

I agree with Spencer; don’t mess with it. It’s not a big deal. Once the tip top is carefully installed, you should be fine. I certainly wouldn’t use epoxy to install the tip top, but that’s me. I always do a small trim wrap below the tip top, it gives a finished look and should help reinforce the tip.

Unless there is a split that travels back beyond the end of the tiptop tube you'll be fine.

I made sure of this. The tip top tube will definitely protrude over the splintered area plenty. Glad my assumption that it would be fine was right. Thanks Tom, Norman, Spencer, and everyone else. I’ll just use the normal tip top glue. About to leave work. My son has been on my butt to get this spinning build done. Teenagers.. LOL.. Re: Blank tip splintering

Because I do not know how the manufacturer terminated the tip. I always cut about 1/8 to 3/16 inch from the tip to insure that the tip is flawless and structurally sound.
Cut away and...... Have fun Re: Blank tip splintering

That’s my back up plan if it comes to that. I put a TINY, thin patch of U40 10 minute epoxy on the section to “bond” it together. My tip guide will still fit over fine. I’m going to use normal tip top glue to put the tip guide on. I don’t expect any issues. Lesson learned. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 09/21/2024 06:59AM by Jeremy Moore.
