Hey guys new to the website and tried the search bar but didn’t find any post pop up on what I needed. Probably user error but I figured I’d ask. I’m looking into building a new trap rod for 1/2-5/8 ounce traps. I’m a big fan of north fork blanks but their website can be hard to get info on the blanks. If anyone has a good recommendation on a lipless rod give me a shout. Thanks guys! Re: Lipless crank/ trap rod recommendation.

I use a MHX CB843 and have also use the CB841....I wouldnt hesitate to throw a trap on either one.
I also use those rods for other crank baits. You dont want it to stout or fast. Re: Lipless crank/ trap rod recommendation.

How do you fish them?
If youre talking cast and retrieve fishing, the NFC Delta CB706 would be a great choice. Or the APFG 745 if you want a little more length. Re: Lipless crank/ trap rod recommendation.

There are several ways to work one and a fair weight range. Before I got into yo-yo working the LV500’s, my answer would have been very different. You did give a weight range, but there are more variables. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 08/05/2024 11:39PM by Kendall Cikanek. Re: Lipless crank/ trap rod recommendation.

Counter productive to keeping fish buttoned up on lipless crankbaits, but a more stout and faster action rod is pretty much a must have if you're ripping baits free of grass or trying to clear grass from the bait. As Kendall mentioned, there are more variables that need to be considered. Re: Lipless crank/ trap rod recommendation.

I second the NFC APFG 745. Re: Lipless crank/ trap rod recommendation.

Didn’t think to mention that these rods will be mostly used fishing hydrilla. Down here in East Texas we have miles of the stuff so a stouter rod is a must but don’t want to over do it. I’ve fished a few different blanks but wanted to get some more input on some blank ideas. Re: Lipless crank/ trap rod recommendation.

Might also consider X-ray NEO MB 765 (cut to whatever length you prefer). Very forgiving tip but quickly gets into backbone. Re: Lipless crank/ trap rod recommendation.

I was thinking that blank would possibly work I ordered one a few days ago now just waiting on it to show up. Re: Lipless crank/ trap rod recommendation.

Just an idea ..... I built a rod I use for throwing glidebaits and hard bodied swimbaits between 1 1/2 - 3 1/8 oz, on an NFC SW 764 Delta blank. It's a moderate action, rated for 3/8 2 1/4 oz baits, and 10 - 20 lb line. It has very good power. An IP of 941 grams so it's pretty stout. While it's a moderate action I think it has enough power in the tip that it would probably be pretty good at ripping a bait out of grass, or to clear the hooks of hanging weeds. I really like it for the size baits I throw on it, and it keeps fish buttoned up on treble hooks quite nicely.
I've also thrown as small as a 3/8 oz chatterbait with it, and casts it no problem at all. It will definitely rip a bait out of, and clear a bait of weeds. They also make the blank in the IM series, but the Delta is on sale for $35 right now. Definitely a blank you may want to take a look at. Re: Lipless crank/ trap rod recommendation.

I really like moderate fast rods is many situations. They flip, and work bigger crankbaits and spinnerbaits very well. They might cast the farthest of all actions. They set hooks almost as well as fast action rods and are better at keeping fish pinned. I like them a lot on lipless crankbaits as they are again a “Goldilocks” balance between lift and fall working and offering some cushion. Rainshadow often names theirs’ “popping” blanks, but don’t get caught up on that. They are far more versatile than that use. I built on one and have done almost everything but pop with it. They come in raw carbon without any graphics. I’d use the ETEP76MH-SS for this build. Like Kevin said, cut one to four inches off the butt if you are so inclined. I probably would build it full length to maybe minus one inch.
Now that I see the CCS intrinsic power slots in at 493 (old for an MH rated for 3/4 oz), it might be too light of a rod if you get buried deeply in the hydrilla. It depends on how heavy of an outfit you want to work those traps on. Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 08/08/2024 12:10AM by Kendall Cikanek. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
